Steven And Stephen Are Going Under The Dome

20 November 2009 10:31 AM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

I haven't read any Stephen King books since the Dark Tower series. After the second book, I just lost interest in his writing. It felt as if he was stretching out his story for too many books and I no longer had the patience to read through it.His new book Under the Dome? Over 1,000 pages in length. Seriously? I don't have time to read through a 1,000 page book. I'd rather get in three or four good 400 page books. Christ, even the longest Harry Potter book wasn't that big. One of my favorite books is A History of Knowledge by Charles Van Doren. Shit's 400 pages. I don't know what the hell King is writing about. Steven Spielberg is looking to adapt his new book into some sort of series. The trades has more:It's a potent combination: Steven + Stephen. The Week in Film: Oscar Bait

12 November 2009 9:02 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Why, hello, folks! Another week means another week closer to December, which means it’s another week closer to Oscar bait movies. Aren’t you curious? I know you are, so let’s begin!

First up, we have 2012. It’s one of those natural disaster movies, but this time, on a global scale. The whole thing is based on the end of the world that in turn is based on the Mayan calendar. Expect super visual effects in the likes of things blowing up, giant tsunamis, raining meteors, skyscrapers collapsing, and Godzilla. Oh wait, scratch that last one.

Okay, sure this isn’t Oscar bait. But still, if you’re feeling like July in November, go for it! Oh, yeah, 2012 stars John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Oliver Platt, and Amanda Peet.

The second of the two wide releases this week is Pirate Radio. In the 1960s, a bunch of DJs went on a boat, »

IFC Films has sent over four clips from Adam Elliot’s animated “Mary and Max”, which follows the tale of friendship between two unlikely pen pals: Mary (Bethany Whitmore), a lonely, eight-year-old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a forty-four-year old, severely obese man living in New York. In the movies it’s cute, but in real life the cops kick down your door for it. Go figure. Mary And Max is a clayography feature film from Academy Award® winning writer/director Adam Elliot and producer Melanie Coombs, featuring the voice talents of Toni Collette, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Barry Humphries and Eric Bana. Spanning 20 years and 2 continents, Mary And Max tells of a pen-pal relationship between two very different people: Mary Dinkle (Collette), a chubby, lonely 8-year-old living in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia; and Max Horovitz (Hoffman), a severely obese, 44-year-old Jewish man »

Trailer for Sundance Claymation Mary & Max

20 October 2009 9:37 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Mary and Max was much-hyped as the opening night film of this year's Sundance Film Festival, but got overshadowed, as these things do, by festival upstarts like 500 Days of Summer and Moon. Now the film is finally seeing release thanks to Sundance Selects, and is available on-demand right this minute from various cable providers. If you want a taste of what you're about to see before you go ahead and order a movie, we don't blame you. Luckily, Trailer Addict got their hands on a new trailer for the film, which introduces us to the pen-pal relationship between lonely Australian girl Mary (voiced by Toni Collette) and even lonelier Manhattan man Max (Philip Seymour Hoffman). It looks cute and touching with a big dollop of weird, and exactly the kind of thing worth watching when there's nothing else on. Check out the trailer below, and if you like it, it »

Trailer - The Claymation Feature Film 'Mary and Max'

20 October 2009 2:40 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Over the weekend, the Australian Oscar-winning animator Adam Elliot picked up the top honor at the Ottawa International Animation Festival for his claymation feature Mary and Max. Best of all, you can watch it on TV.

The film features the voicework of Toni Collette, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Eric Bana, "spanning 20 years and two continents," chronicling "the unlikely friendship survives much more than the average diet of life's ups and downs." In addition to wowing Sundance crowds, it's now been picked up for an In Demand release in the U.S., and you can apparently catch it now on Sundance VOD. If you've got Cablevision, Cox, Bright House, Comcast, or Time Warner, good on you.

And you should absolutely check out this trailer for Mary and Max, even if you don't have a lot of interest in going the Video On Demand route. Not so coincidentally, here is the trailer, »

Mary and Max - Collette & Hoffman Hidden Gem Trailer

19 October 2009 7:58 PM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

In the never ending search to defy Hollywood and find the lesser known or forgotten gems, we present to you the trailer for "Mary and Max." The film was released on April 9th in Australia and has garnered accolades at numerous film festivals. "Mary and Max" is a film noir CG animation starring Toni Collette and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. To say it's bizarre would be an understatement. The humor bares a striking resemblance to Japanese Anime humor mixed with Looney Tunes, so you'll get slapstick with the occasional child peeing in public. Let's not forget that once you see the trailer, you'll immediately think that this is a profane story about a pedophile. Beneath the disturbing surface lies a endearing story that will make you laugh as you question your own ethics. Currently, "Mary and Max" is airing on IFC in Theaters and Sundance Selects. ‘Mary and Max’ - When Mime Artists and Airconditioners Meet

19 October 2009 7:23 PM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

Ever Wonder what happens When Mime Artists and Airconditioners Meet?" Here's a quick short from Academy Award winning writer/director Adam Elliot and producer Melanie Coombscreator. Much like Pixar's use of one-offs to promote features, this one-off demonstrates the kind of humor you will find in 'Mary and Max', one of the latest indie films, toting several film festival accolades, to grace IFC. The animated noir sticks to a black and white motif, and the humor will give you the disturbing feel as if you're watching Loony Tunes Gone Wild. Mary And Max Review

18 October 2009 9:14 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It was created with Claymation, its main characters speak with adorable accents, and funny-looking animals are involved - but “Wallace and Gromit” this ain’t.

Director Adam Elliot won an Oscar for 2003’s “Harvie Krumpet”, a 23-minute animated short about a one-testicled, Tourette’s-ridden World War II survivor and animal rights activist, and he brings that same gift for unique characters and melancholy overtones to his debut full-length feature “Mary and Max”. My review after the jump:

Mary and Max” is an unusual, difficult-to-describe movie, to say the least. The broad strokes go like this: Mary Daisy Dinkle, a crushingly lonely eight-year-old Australian girl with a largely absentee father and an overbearing monster for a mother, goes thumbing through a post office phone book, chooses a random name - Max Jerry Horovitz of New York - and sends him a letter, thus beginning a long transcontinental friendship.
