Why, hello, folks! Another week means another week closer to December, which means it’s another week closer to Oscar bait movies. Aren’t you curious? I know you are, so let’s begin!
First up, we have 2012. It’s one of those natural disaster movies, but this time, on a global scale. The whole thing is based on the end of the world that in turn is based on the Mayan calendar. Expect super visual effects in the likes of things blowing up, giant tsunamis, raining meteors, skyscrapers collapsing, and Godzilla. Oh wait, scratch that last one.
Okay, sure this isn’t Oscar bait. But still, if you’re feeling like July in November, go for it! Oh, yeah, 2012 stars John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Oliver Platt, and Amanda Peet.
The second of the two wide releases this week is Pirate Radio. In the 1960s, a bunch of DJs went on a boat, »

IFC Films has sent over four clips from Adam Elliot’s animated “Mary and Max”, which follows the tale of friendship between two unlikely pen pals: Mary (Bethany Whitmore), a lonely, eight-year-old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a forty-four-year old, severely obese man living in New York. In the movies it’s cute, but in real life the cops kick down your door for it. Go figure. Mary And Max is a clayography feature film from Academy Award® winning writer/director Adam Elliot and producer Melanie Coombs, featuring the voice talents of Toni Collette, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Barry Humphries and Eric Bana. Spanning 20 years and 2 continents, Mary And Max tells of a pen-pal relationship between two very different people: Mary Dinkle (Collette), a chubby, lonely 8-year-old living in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia; and Max Horovitz (Hoffman), a severely obese, 44-year-old Jewish man »

Tina Mabry's "Mississippi Damned," an independent American production, won the Gold Hugo as the best film in the 2009 Chicago International Film Festival, and added Gold Plaques for best supporting actress (Jossie Thacker) and best screenplay (Mabry). It tells the harrowing story of three black children growing up in rural Mississippi in circumstances of violence and addiction. The film's trailer and an interview with Mabry are linked at the bottom.

The win came over a crowed field of competitors from all over the world, many of them with much larger budgets. The other big winner at the Pump Room of the Ambassador East awards ceremony Saturday evening was by veteran master Marco Bellocchio of Italy, who won the Silver Hugo as best director for "Vincere," the story of Mussolini's younger brother. Mary and Max was much-hyped as the opening night film of this year's Sundance Film Festival, but got overshadowed, as these things do, by festival upstarts like 500 Days of Summer and Moon. Now the film is finally seeing release thanks to Sundance Selects, and is available on-demand right this minute from various cable providers. If you want a taste of what you're about to see before you go ahead and order a movie, we don't blame you. Luckily, Trailer Addict got their hands on a new trailer for the film, which introduces us to the pen-pal relationship between lonely Australian girl Mary (voiced by Toni Collette) and even lonelier Manhattan man Max (Philip Seymour Hoffman). It looks cute and touching with a big dollop of weird, and exactly the kind of thing worth watching when there's nothing else on. Check out the trailer below, and if you like it, it »

Over the weekend, the Australian Oscar-winning animator Adam Elliot picked up the top honor at the Ottawa International Animation Festival for his claymation feature Mary and Max. Best of all, you can watch it on TV.
The film features the voicework of Toni Collette, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Eric Bana, "spanning 20 years and two continents," chronicling "the unlikely friendship survives much more than the average diet of life's ups and downs." In addition to wowing Sundance crowds, it's now been picked up for an In Demand release in the U.S., and you can apparently catch it now on Sundance VOD. If you've got Cablevision, Cox, Bright House, Comcast, or Time Warner, good on you.
And you should absolutely check out this trailer for Mary and Max, even if you don't have a lot of interest in going the Video On Demand route. Not so coincidentally, here is the trailer, »

In the never ending search to defy Hollywood and find the lesser known or forgotten gems, we present to you the trailer for "Mary and Max." The film was released on April 9th in Australia and has garnered accolades at numerous film festivals. "Mary and Max" is a film noir CG animation starring Toni Collette and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. To say it's bizarre would be an understatement. The humor bares a striking resemblance to Japanese Anime humor mixed with Looney Tunes, so you'll get slapstick with the occasional child peeing in public. Let's not forget that once you see the trailer, you'll immediately think that this is a profane story about a pedophile. Beneath the disturbing surface lies a endearing story that will make you laugh as you question your own ethics. Currently, "Mary and Max" is airing on IFC in Theaters and Sundance Selects. Ever Wonder what happens When Mime Artists and Airconditioners Meet?" Here's a quick short from Academy Award winning writer/director Adam Elliot and producer Melanie Coombscreator. Much like Pixar's use of one-offs to promote features, this one-off demonstrates the kind of humor you will find in 'Mary and Max', one of the latest indie films, toting several film festival accolades, to grace IFC. The animated noir sticks to a black and white motif, and the humor will give you the disturbing feel as if you're watching Loony Tunes Gone Wild. It was created with Claymation, its main characters speak with adorable accents, and funny-looking animals are involved - but “Wallace and Gromit” this ain’t.
Director Adam Elliot won an Oscar for 2003’s “Harvie Krumpet”, a 23-minute animated short about a one-testicled, Tourette’s-ridden World War II survivor and animal rights activist, and he brings that same gift for unique characters and melancholy overtones to his debut full-length feature “Mary and Max”. My review after the jump:
“Mary and Max” is an unusual, difficult-to-describe movie, to say the least. The broad strokes go like this: Mary Daisy Dinkle, a crushingly lonely eight-year-old Australian girl with a largely absentee father and an overbearing monster for a mother, goes thumbing through a post office phone book, chooses a random name - Max Jerry Horovitz of New York - and sends him a letter, thus beginning a long transcontinental friendship.

When the claymation film Mary and Max premiered at Sundance in January, it was met with great acclaim. (It's currently at 95% at Rottentomatoes.) The film marks the feature debut of Adam Elliot, who won an Oscar with his short film Harvie Krumpet. It tells the story of an unlikely friendship. Mary is a young Australian girl with no friends. She becomes penpals with Max, an aging and obese man from New York who has a great number of neurosis and insecurities. The film's style is a bit visually goofy but also touching and surprisingly effective. There's a new trailer for the film, which is now available On Demand; watch it after the break. The film's primary voices are by Toni Collette (Mary) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (Max) but you'd have a difficult time pegging either one right off, as they're both deep in character. (Hoffman is a bit easier to »

Chicago – The second week of The 45th Chicago Film Festival kicks off tonight (or tomorrow depending on how you look at the fest that runs from the 8th to the 22nd) and the upcoming weekend features just as much and arguably more interesting films unspooling at the AMC River East than the first. Highlights include one of the best animated films of the year, a bittersweet romance starring two living legends, a remastered classic, and works from a few of the best voices in international cinema today.
We’ve worked our way through dozens of films this year, but even we couldn’t get to all of them and a few weren’t even shown in the screening room in time for our deadline. So this week’s Ciff preview works a little differently. The first page features the best of what we’ve seen. Take our word. These are worth your time. »

Matt LeBlanc has been little seen since his ill-conceived "Friends" spinoff "Joey" crashed and burned three years ago. While that show sputtered out after two seasons on NBC, it's failure should not take away from the enormous success LeBlanc enjoyed with "Friends." And no doubt he hopes to recapture some of that magic with his newly announced series "Episodes," a co-production between Showtime and the BBC set to air next year. This showcase for LeBlanc is being shepherded by two sitcom veterans -- "Friends" co-creator David Crane and "Mad About You" producer Jeffrey Klarik. The single-camera comedy will follow the misadventures of an English couple whose urbane Britcom is dumbed down for American audiences with the casting of LeBlanc, who will play an exaggerated version of himself. As he said in today's news release: "I am so glad I got the part, seeing someone else play Matt LeBlanc would have been devastating. »

Adam Mast reviews the horror that stars Megan 'the body' Fox.
Following an Oscar win for her Juno screenplay, Diablo Cody went on to create The United States of Tara, an immensley entertaining HBO show that just earned star Toni Collette an Emmy. How do you follow that? With a horror movie of course. In Jennifer's Body, Megan Fox plays a teenager named--you guessed it--Jennifer. While at a local bar with her her nerdy girlfriend Needy (Mamma Mia's Amanda Seyfried), Jennifer is bewitched by a top of the charts emo band called Low Shoulder. The band takes a liking to Jennifer, and without missing a beat, the mischievious teen jumps in the band's van leaving a helpless Needy to fend for herself. Later that evening, a bloodied Jennifer shows up at Needy's house. Only she's not the same Jennifer. Before long, this altered teen becomes a man eater--literally!
Diablo Cody writes really colorful dialogue, »
