The Long Goodbye: Elliott Gould Remembers Robert Altman

10 May 2009 2:01 PM, PDT | From The Hollywood Interview | See recent The Hollywood Interview news

(Elliott Gould, above, as Philip Marlowe in The Long Goodbye.)

by Jon Zelazny

Editor’s note: this article originally appeared at EightMillionStories.com on November 14, 2008.

With the back-to-back success of his Oscar-nominated role in the off-beat wife-swapping hit Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969) and the even bigger off-beat hit Mash (1970), Brooklyn’s own Elliott Gould skyrocketed to worldwide fame.

While perhaps best known to those under 40 as Ross and Monica’s dad on “Friends,” or Vegas financier Reuben Tishkoff in the blockbuster Ocean’s 11 series, cine-scholars generally regard Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye (1973) as Gould’s most iconic starring role. 2008 marks the 35th anniversary of their extraordinary modern-day reinterpretation of Raymond Chandler’s classic private eye, Philip Marlowe.

Elliott Gould invited me to his home in west Los Angeles, where he generously spoke at length of his three major collaborations with Altman, who passed away two years ago.

Gervais and Merchant to start shooting new feature in London!

6 May 2009 10:02 AM, PDT | From TwitchFilm.net | See recent Twitch news

I have a bit of a problem with Ricky Gervais. I love his stand-up and have a soft spot for Extras but really can’t see beyond his off-screen persona when it comes to film roles. His cameo in Stardust pulls you right out of the experience as you ponder what on earth he’s doing in fancy dress. In a proper movie. So it turns out, strangely, he’s got a lot in common with Tom Cruise – can’t get beyond his personality to find the character he’s supposed to be playing. Anyhow, his next feature, Cemetery Junction, is a British-set period comedy that starts shooting in London on 15th June, co-written and directed by Stephen Merchant:

“In 1970s England, three blue-collar friends spend their days joking, drinking, fighting and chasing girls.

Freddie (Christian Cooke) wants to leave their working-class world but cool, charismatic Bruce (Tom Hughes

The Men at the Pru gets a new title

28 April 2009 11:02 PM, PDT | From FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news

The first feature film to be co-written and directed by The Office and Extras creators, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, has undergone a name change. The Men at the Pru will now and forever be known as Cemetery Junction.

Not only has the film undergone a name change, but yesterday the film’s official synopsis was announced, along with the principal cast members, all of whom are virtual unknowns.

Christian Cooke, from ITV's supernatural drama "Demons" will star as Freddie, a young man growing up in 1970s England along with his best friends, Bruce (Tom Hughes) and lovable loser Snork (Jack Doolan, aka Tyler from Green Green Grass). According to Empire:

Although the trio, who all work at Prudential (hence the original title) spend their time laughing, drinking, fighting and chasing after the ladies, Freddie wants more, and gets a job as a door-to-door salesman. There, he bumps into his old school sweetheart,

Nanny McPhee 2 Cast Gets Packed

15 April 2009 8:06 AM, PDT | From cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news

We knew a few days ago that Maggie Gyllenhaal would be joining the cast of Nanny McPhee 2, thanks to Production Weekly. And now that Variety has confirmed the story, they've at least got a few more names to add to the pile. Rhys Ifans, Maggie Smith, and Asa Butterfield have all signed on to join the cast, which makes this just a Julie Christie away from being as packed as a Harry Potter cast. It practically is a Harry Potter cast, actually, including Ifans, Thompson, Smith and Ralph Fiennes. Emma Thompson, of course, will be returning as the nanny with magical powers, and Variety says this time she'll be taking care of kids who are evacuated from the city during wartime-- presumably the London Blitz during World War II. That's the exact same premise that kicks off The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, oddly enough, except replace a faun

This Decade's Oscar Winner Batting Averages

23 February 2009 5:32 PM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

It was last night's Meryl Streep chit-chat that got me to thinking; Hell, 15 nominations is impressive enough, and she's even won the dang Oscar twice! For Kramer vs. Kramer and Sophie's Choice. But while in the lovely land of Hollywood that's a track record to be amazingly proud of, the simple truth is that, in the land of baseball, Meryl Streep would be batting a lusty .133. I've seen American League pitchers who can bat .133!

And that silly thought led to the next logically silly one: If Meryl Streep is batting .133, who Else is batting poorly? And conversely ... who's leading the league? Now, I've got to limit eligibility to those who've been nominated at least three times, because otherwise we'd have Anna Paquin as Mickey Mantle. And I'm limiting this project to actors only, because that way one can squeeze another post or two out of this lame concept if people actually like it.

Watch out, Mickey Rourke: Indie Spirit is Oscar's consolation prize

21 February 2009 1:43 PM, PST | From Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news

The Independent Spirit award is supposed to salute what past ceremony host Samuel L. Jackson once called "the strange, the weird, the eclectic, the visionary, the new blood." Ideally, its purpose is to help those low-profile quality films that could use a boost so that someday, maybe, the filmmakers and performers could compete in the big league of the Oscars.

And back when the Spirits took flight, they tried hard to keep to that mission. Indeed, its first best-picture winner in 1985, "After Hours," wasn't nominated for a single Oscar. But then "Platoon" won best pic at both the Spirits and the Oscars the next year. From then on, the Spirits focused more and more on seemingly academy-friendly films, with a corresponding increase in its own profile. While 1987 best-pic winner "River's Edge" was snubbed at the Oscars, other early champs made it into Oscar categories like screenplay ("sex, lies and videotape,

Will the Babe Factor help Kate Winslet in a close Oscars contest with Meryl Streep?

18 February 2009 8:44 AM, PST | From Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news

"It wasn't calculated! I swear! You must believe me!" Kate Winslet gasped to Gold Derby late last year as we discussed her recent photo shoot with Vanity Fair. That bawdy gig had been a perfect way for her to begin seducing Oscars' voters as she unveiled "Revolutionary Road" and "The Reader."

As every Oscarologist knows, voters have judged the lead and supporting actress races in recent years as if they were beauty pageants. Consider, for example, some of the gals who won best actress this past decade: Julia Roberts, Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon. Last year, when most Oscar pundits bet on 66-year-old Julie Christie ("Away From Her") to win, the younger, prettier contender pulled off an upset: Marion Cotillard ("La Vie en Rose").

Only two women over the age of 50 have nabbed an Oscar over the past 15 years: Judi Dench ("Shakespeare in Love," 1998) and Helen Mirren ("The Queen,

David Tennant will appear in the forthcoming Stephen Poliakoff movie 1939, which has just received around £1million lottery funding from the UK Film Council. Described as a "tense psychological thriller", 1939 features David Tennant appearing alongside a remarkable cast: Romola Garai (Atonement), Bill Nighy (Love Actually), the great Julie Christie and equally great Christopher Lee (Lord of The Rings), Eddie Redmayne (The Other Boleyn Girl), Juno Temple (Wild Child), ...

Can Amy Adams really pull off an upset at the Oscars?

10 February 2009 3:02 PM, PST | From Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news

When Tariq Khan makes a bold Oscar prediction, take heed. He's one of the savviest Oscarologists I know and this year he's going where no other guru dares: out onto a thin, shaky limb for Amy Adams ("Doubt") for supporting actress. Interesting call! That category, after all, is where most Oscar upsets happen.

Tariq has one of the best Oscar prediction rates every year. Check out the forecasts he made last year for Fox News — he scored 100%. Earlier this derby season he was one of the first pundits warning us that Kate Winslet might be nommed for "The Reader" instead of "Revolutionary Road."

Below, Tariq makes his argument for Amy Adams, building his Oscar case carefully by citing past award trends and issues at play this year. I dare to disagree with him, though. I think the two points he's not giving enough due are the Babe Factor and the fact that,

You Vote: Predict the 2009 Screen Actors Guild Award Winners!

Photo: Screen Actors Guild Awards® With all the talk about the Oscars recently it seems everyone forgot that this Sunday, January 25 at 8 Pm Et/Pt on TNT and#038; TBS are the 2009 Screen Actors Guild Awards, the night the actors award actors with the Actor. As if anyone should, would or could forget. Well, if you did forget I am here to remind you while at the same time offer up some predictions for the film categories as well as ask you to do a little predicting of your own. One thing to know before making your picks is to realize the SAGs don't necessarily follow with award season tradition. Sure, last year they awarded Javier Bardem and Daniel Day-Lewis just as did the Oscars and Golden Globes, but they also gave Ruby Dee (American Gangster) and Julie Christie (Away From Her) awards. In 2007 they matched up more accurately, but while

Casablanca named top movie kiss

14 January 2009 3:16 AM, PST | From Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news

What makes a classic onscreen smooch? That was the riddle presented to female patients at Manchester’s private dental practice, Kissdental who were asked to name their favourite silver screen snog in a new survey. The 500 participants clearly had some serious and weighty issues to consider. Is it attractive co-stars with electric chemistry? A physical release to lots of pent-up emotion or just lusty slobbering? Whatever their definition of cool kissing, they opted for the one between Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in 1942’s timeless romance Casablanca. Apparently that kiss is one that Sam can definitely play again.

Coming in second was the embrace between two-time Golden Globe winner Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio in their first onscreen pairing in the tragic Titanic. On an equally epic scale but more old-school like the winner is the third placed puckering up between Omar Sharif and Julie Christie in 1965’s David Lean masterpiece Doctor Zhivago.

Why Sarah Polley Rules

8 January 2009 7:14 AM, PST | From FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news

.

Ja from Mnpp here. Today is Sarah Polley's 30th birthday, so we all must take a moment and bow down to this most lovely of creatures. Here are ten reasons why she's awesome.

1 - She played Sally Salt in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen when she was 9 years old, and recently described the experience as "incredibly unsafe" and "traumatic"... so much so that she publicly derided Terry Gilliam when he cast a girl of the same age as his lead in Tideland. I mean, I love Gilliam, but you go, girl.

2 - Her performance in The Sweet Hereafter,

where I fell in love with her for the first time.

3 - She was in an episode of Friday the 13th: The Series. Insta-cool points.

4 - "And here I thought you just gave me head."

5 - She cuddled with Scott Speedman. Swoon.

6 - She loves doing genre flicks. She kicked ass
