More from the London Film Festival, where Dave had a rather dreadful day at the movies, but I've omitted tearing apart "a new Slumdog Millionaire?", Ride the Wave Johnny (which is, can you believe it, even worse than our newest Best Picture winner), and have instead finally decided to give you my (briefer than I wanted them to be) thoughts on Cannes winner The White Ribbon. But first...

Glorious 39 isn't. Glorious, that is. In fact, it's a remarkable disaster of a film, one of those that slowly goes further and further down the road of dreadful and eventually emerges at somewhere completely laughable, although I'm sure everyone involved saw the ridiculous developments as some masterstroke. Stephen Poliakoff has received critical laudings for his television work over the last decade, but there's no sign of any of that supposed quality here at all. A superb British cast, mixing promising youngsters (Romola Garai, »

Oscar... Now With More Spirit Fingers

23 October 2009 8:36 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Shankman's got spirit!

Do you follow the Oscar show news in the way you follow the Oscars? I don't so much, despite this life I lead constantly writin' about the awards themselves. I care who hosts to some degree but I tend to ignore the rest. But I found it interesting this week when director Adam Shankman (Hairspray) was named as one of the producers and his choreography skills were noted as a reason to be enthused about this assignment. At least he has a sense of humor about his, um, limited history with the big event I was one of Paula Abdul's 'Under the Sea' pirates," Shankman said. "The last time I was at the Oscars, I was in Lycra, with a pirate hat on. Shankman's presence must mean more musical numbers. I'm all for musical numbers provided they rehire Hugh Jackman as host. He was so fine last year. »

10 Most Underrated Young Actresses

22 October 2009 1:48 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Can the media alter the public's perception of an actor? I believe so - that's why we have the likes of Megan Fox hugging the headlines and getting the covers of men's magazines, while a lot of more talented young actresses could not even manage to get featured and have interviews. If you think about it, what has she done in the movies to deserve so much publicity and attention? - - -

- - - Some may argue, 'hey, don't blame her, she's just good at playing the Hollywood game, and she got a shrewd agent managing her career!'. That maybe so and yes, I agree when others say 'she'll not last another year - others will soon take over'. There are those who may say 'Agents and talent managers always take care of their wards - that's why stars have a public image and a private one'. »

[Movie Review] New York, I Love You

16 October 2009 4:08 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

If you've seen Paris, je t'aime, you would know the basic concept of New York, I Love You. Some of the world's celebrated filmmakers create short tales of romance based in a metropolitan city, compiled in an anthology film. The stories stand on their own, but connected together by the common theme of love and the mood of its location.

What's different—and consequently better—about New York, I Love You is that the individual stories are interconnected, to illustrate a web of people that links New Yorkers in unexpected ways. It could be that two strangers hail the same cab, or go to the same Chinese laundromat, or know the same pharmacist. Furthering these links is Emilie Ohana, playing a video artist who circles the city with a video camera and continually runs into the other characters.

Unlike the segmented and showcasey Paris, je t'aime, this film is much more fluid. »

'New York, I Love You': Out-Of-Towners, By Kurt Loder

16 October 2009 8:53 AM, PDT | MTV Movie News | See recent MTV Movie News news »

High-concept anthology gets lost in Gotham.

Orlando Bloom in "New York, I Love You"

A revved-up writer (Ethan Hawke) improvises a mad rap for a beautiful stranger in the night (Maggie Q), only to learn she's uniquely immune to his come-on. Meanwhile, in a downtown bar, a sardonic professor (Andy Garcia) teaches some new tricks to an over-confident young thief (Hayden Christenson). And a geeky student (Anton Yelchin), dumped by his girlfriend (Blake Lively), winds up squiring a disabled blind date (Olivia Thirlby) to a big dance in her wheelchair — and then gets a wild surprise while rolling her back home.

The new mini-movie collection "New York, I Love You" has some cleverly turned stories and lively performances. But unlike its 2006 predecessor, "Paris, I Love You," it displays only an intermittent affinity for its target metropolis on the part of the 11 directors who weighed in on it. »

'New York, I Love You' Unleashes New Clip

2 October 2009 11:38 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

A brand new clip of "New York, I Love You" has been put forth in anticipation to the film's October release. Released at MySpace, the snippet takes a one minute plus look at the segment directed by Shekhar Kapur. It features a scene between Julie Christie's Isabelle and Shia Labeouf's Jacob inside an elegant hotel.

The segment follows Isabelle, an opera singer who checks into an elegant hotel to kill herself, as Variety claimed. She's intrigued by a handicapped bellboy, Jacob, who magically becomes associated with John Hurt's character. The piece is one of the last pieces of writing from the late director Anthony Minghella. When Minghella passed away, Kapur took over the directing part.

From the producer of "Paris, je t'aime", "New York, I Love You" is a collaboration of storytelling from some of today's most imaginative filmmakers from the acclaimed Mira Nair to newcomer to the job Natalie Portman. »

Olivia Wilde is taking tips on how to negotiate Hollywood from an Oscar-winning mentor - actress Julie Christie.

Christie, a family friend, has taken the House actress under her wing and is helping her cope with the pressures and strains of a life in the spotlight.

Like Wilde, Christie juggled modelling and acting careers - and the young star credits her mentor with helping her keep her feet on the ground as her career takes off.

She tells GQ magazine, "She (Christie) said that it's all temporary. She got certain opportunities because she was a beauty, a fashion icon, and she was very grateful, very flattered." »

Exclusive: Ten Questions for Filmmaker Sally Potter

27 September 2009 9:35 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The movie Rage opens to a black screen. The clicking sound of typing and the words "All the Rage" appear. A cursor hesitates before deleting the first two words. The word Rage fills the screen. The audience is then informed that the film to follow is "by Michaelangelo." Although we never see Michelangelo or hear him speak, he adds prefaces in writing to the multitudinous portrait interviews that he films backstage at a New York fashion show. We are introduced to fourteen characters, all filmed against eye-popping solid color backdrops...

Simon Abkarian is the show’s John Galliano-like fashion designer, Merlin. He proclaims "I am an Event!" but also posits himself as both sensitive and dangerous. For him a "dress is not a dress," it is a revelation, "a sacred vessel for the miraculous." As such, he regards himself as a high priest of fashion.

So if you’ve been waiting for the film, you can see a lot of it right now. If you’re not familiar with “New York, I Love You”, the film’s got a huge cast and eleven directors telling stories about New York City and love. Take a look:
