Political sitcom in the works: All those in favor...

16 September 2009 2:33 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

ABC has a D.C.-set sitcom in the works from Friends and How I Met Your Mother alum Greg Malins and, er, Arianna Huffington. Freshmen will follow three newbie representatives -- two men and a woman -- who share a house. (And more! I'm guessing.) Malins told Variety that he "always knew wanted to do a show" in DC, and that "once discovered that members of Congress often live together," he knew he was set. He might have "discovered" this one of the nine billion times it's been written about in the New York Times alone, all of which mention its sitcommy potential. But okay. Freshmen is the latest in a string of politically-oriented shows in development: Earlier this summer, Body Politic, The CW's would-be D.C. series, didn't get past the pilot stage, but CBS's House Rules (starring Anna Chlumsky) is still in the works. In the Loop

5 September 2009 6:03 PM, PDT | Anh Khoi Do and Movies | See recent Anh Khoi Do and Movies news »

Regardless of our nationality, we have good reasons to appreciate In the Loop. In fact, with all the serious political films we're used to see, it's refreshing to see one that pokes fun at those who represent us. Besides, despite its few flaws in the script, In the Loop's humour is never vulgar and is sure going to entertain you.

During an interview on radio, Simon Foster (Tom Hollander), Great Britain's Minister for International Development, accidentally states that a war in the Middle East is "unforeseeable". Now that he regrets it Simon tries everything he can to avoid supporting an eventual war in the Middle East despite the pressure from Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi), the Prime Minister's "enforcer". Therefore, what should Simon do while he's diplomatically visiting the USA?

Obviously, as a comedy, In the Loop brings quite a fresh air. With a limited use of music and a rather simple editing, »

The Ten Best and Five Worst Films of 2009 (So Far)

6 August 2009 11:23 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

2009's Ten Best and Five Worst Films (So Far) We're technically over halfway through 2009, but a disproportionately large number of great films tend to spring up in the latter months of the year, so let's call it halfway for the sake of our collective sanity. It hasn't been a terrific year for filmgoing so far this year, but there have been enough films worth celebrating to justify a roundup. Keep in mind that these rankings are tentative - they're largely based on single viewings, and my estimates of their relative worth may vary over the course of the year. My principal question when ranking new film is: "which films am I most eager to watch again?" With that in mind, my top ten films of the year so far, in descending order: 10. Peter Capaldi and Chris Addison in In the Loop

Photo: IFC Films The villain/hero of In the Loop is not so much a who as it is a what, and even that what can't be clearly defined as director Armando Iannucci and a staff of five talented writers pieced together one of the most smartly written and superbly executed political comedies I have ever seen, if not the absolute pinnacle of the genre. It's not often I watch a movie and feel confident in saying it is "the best" or "one of the best" of anything, but without a doubt In the Loop is one of the best comedies I have ever seen and one that does not get old (I have seen it three times now). However, do not wait to watch it on DVD. It is meant to be seen with a large audience, all of you »

'Cupid' Recurring Star Anna Chlumsky Making Her Movie Comeback

27 July 2009 1:45 PM, PDT | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

Even though she was famous for starring in the coming-of-age movies My Girl and its sequel, former child actress Anna Chlumsky is doing her best to stay up in Hollywood.  With a recurring role on ABC's Cupid as Josie, the 28-year-old star holding on to the craft of acting and even bagged another movie stint.  She's been cast on the upcoming ensemble comedy In the Loop.

Despite her skills and charm, Anna Chlumsky experienced difficulties in obtaining parts as she grew up.  Her teen years led her to take a break from a showbiz life, focusing on her studies instead.  Still, she managed to appear in television series like 30 Rock and Law & Order, as well as in a number of theatre productions.

Whatever Happened to My Girl's Anna Chlumsky?

27 July 2009 11:20 AM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

She broke your heart and won rave reviews as the earnest kid in the coming-of-age drama My Girl. And then, a few years later, Anna Chlumsky had her own heart broken - by Hollywood. "Show business got really tainted for me," the actress, now 28, says. Growing up with her mother as her acting coach and manager didn't always help, and scoring Hollywood fame at the age of 10 was in some ways more of a burden than a joy. "Kids are brought into show business because they are cute and see truth and they're very bright," she says. "But there's a »

Anna Chlumsky on 'My Girl' Memories, James Gandolfini Stories & 'In the Loop'

23 July 2009 12:00 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

In the early '90s, Anna Chlumsky was one of the most recognizable child stars in America. Her turn as the unforgettably named Vada Sultenfuss in 'My Girl' had wowed critics and won the hearts of filmgoers (don't even pretend you weren't choking back tears during that funeral scene). And then, suddenly, she just disappeared.

But don't worry: Chlumsky did not become another washed-up child-star casualty of the Hollywood machine. Instead, she gave up acting to focus on her education, earning a degree in International Relations from the prestigious University of Chicago before going on to a career in book publishing.

Thankfully for fans, the lure of the screen was too much for Anna to ignore, and this week the now 28-year-old returns to theaters as a sultry, seductive, very un-Vada-like State Department assistant in the BBC political satire 'In the Loop.' In an exclusive interview, Anna »

War of the Words

22 July 2009 2:26 PM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

For weeks now, I've heard fellow critics recommending Armando Iannucci's "In the Loop," a film about a verbal blunder that leads to an international crisis, as a pinnacle of screwball satire, a treasure trove of absurd situations and quotable lines, a "Dr. Strangelove" for the new millennium. I understand the fuss: the state of movie comedy is so generally dismal that when one demonstrates any wit at all, we tend to react like desert travelers who've stumbled upon an oasis. But while I agree that "In the Loop" is a breezy, amusing, committed movie -- writer-director Iannucci was responsible for the BBC's "This is Alan Partridge," the brilliant Steve Coogan vehicle that takes the early Albert Brooks school of miserable jerk comedy as far as it can go -- I wasn't bowled over. It's good, very good, but visually and rhythmically unremarkable and ultimately pretty thin. And there's a »

Tribeca Review: In The Loop

28 April 2009 5:22 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Any time someone asks me what my favorite movie of Tribeca has been, I always have an easy answer: In the Loop. The best part is that no one ever disagrees with me. The political farce from British TV director Armando Iannucci isn't just hilarious and brilliantly paced, and doesn't just feature clever comedic turns from unexpected people like James Gandolfini and Anna Chlumsky (a.k.a. My Girl) It's also one of the best satires to come along in quite a while, a Dr. Strangelove-level examination of all the foolishness, gossip and insecurities that actually make the world run. The film is a spinoff from Iannucci's BBC series In The Thick Of It, but all the two seem to share is a character, Malcolm-- more on him later-- and a willingness to expose every absurdity of political life. While the series focused on domestic disputes, this time the petty »

Sweet Poster Art for In the Loop

20 April 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- Looks like the IFC folks and filmmaker Armando Iannucci are making the most out of a Tribeca Film Festival showing, supporting the movie early on with some poster art eye candy (retro fit) which eventually comes out July 24th. Following in the not so original, but politically-minded "Hope" teaser posters, is the final poster premiere which accompanied Iannucci's recollections of a trip down in Washington - read here. I would not have signalled out the poster if it didn't grab my attention, and the following synopsis below, we get an idea of how scrambled the lines of communication become when the chain of command is lead by the incompetent. How do you like the one sheet? Written by Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci and Tony Roche, the Us President and UK Prime Minister fancy a war, but not everyone agrees that war is a good thing. Us General »

Anna Chlumsky moves on from "My Girl"

17 March 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

I spent a lazy Sunday awhile back flipping through the channels, when I came across My Girl. How could I have forgotten about Vada Sultenfuss, the 1991 girl of my dreams? While all of my friends were more concerned with Macaulay Culkin, I was enamored with Vada and her tomboyish antics, Chuck Taylors and cutoffs.

Anna Chlumsky, who played Vada in the film and its 1994 sequel sans-Culkin (remember: bees), seemed to have fallen off the radar quite a bit. She took a break from acting from 1998-2002 to major in international studies at the University of Chicago, and has in recent years started up again with some theater work, like in Brett C. Leonard's off-Broadway "Unconditional," which was put on by Philip Seymour Hoffman's LAByrinth Theater Company last year.

Chlumsky also has made recent appearances on shows like Law and Order and 30 Rock. I'm willing to bet it was the latter role, »
