Spanish Movie Trailer: A(nother) Herald of the End Times

6 hours ago | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Never, ever make the mistake of thinking that the Us has a lock on shitty, terrible 'parody' comedy films. There's an argument to be made that we're not even close to the worst offender when it comes to making quick-buck films like Date Movie and Epic Movie. As proof, here's the trailer for Spanish Movie, a film produced in Spain that pokes fun at a broad swath of globally-recognizable Spanish-language films. The references are diverse, ranging from The Orphanage and Pan's Labyrinth to The Sea Inside and No Country For Old Men. (Not exactly a Spanish film, but Javier Bardem is close enough, I guess.) Some of the films used as material are a bit out of date, but the comedy on display in the trailer is hardly fresh. Javier Ruiz Caldera directs the film, which is expected to become one of the year's biggest box-office successes in Spain. It »

Javier Bardem went with the increasingly popular scruffy look as he ran errands near La yesterday. He's solo in California as girlfriend Penelope Cruz is off promoting Nine in Europe with big premieres, but they were just together celebrating Thanksgiving with Sean Penn. Javier was most recently the one jetting around the globe to work on his latest movie, Eat, Pray, Love, but hopefully soon he and Penelope can reunite and settle in for the holidays. How Hollywood destroyed our classical legends

3 December 2009 2:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

It took a millennium for western civilisation to create a canon of classical literature – but just 10 years for Hollywood to destroy it

When I think back on this decade's spate of movies based on the great legends of European history, I remember how fantastically it started – with Gladiator – and how badly things went downhill after that: with Kingdom of Heaven, Troy, 300 and Beowulf. When I saw Gladiator in 2000, I thought this was going to be just the best millennium ever. It had everything you could want in a movie: glory, gore, guts, gladiators. It was a sweeping epic with a computer-generated cast of thousands. Augustus Caesar would have been proud of it. Julius and Tiberius, too.

Yet the thing I liked most about Ridley Scott's superb film was how closely it hewed to the historical record, in its portrayal of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) as the depraved son of Marcus Aurelius, »

Penelope Strikes One Pose After Another For Nine in Interview

3 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Penelope Cruz went with red lips and lots of diamonds for the January cover of Interview. She posed for an accompanying sexy spread and talked about Nine with her costar in the film, Marion Cotillard. There's all sorts of speculation about Penelope's personal life and possible engagement to Javier Bardem, but the ladies kept things strictly focused on business - Penelope shared about what compelled her to act, her inspirations, and what it was like on the female-centered set of Nine. Here's more: On what inspired her to act: "That question actually brings me to the reason why I decided to become an actress, which is my constant curiosity about the endless mysteries of human behavior. Because we are dealing with the beauty and complexity of human confusion, no? And we are always trying to get answers." On when she knew she wanted to act: "I think since I was around four years old. »

Spanish bombshell Penélope Cruz resorted to some highly unusual methods to get in the mood for her sexy dance number in her upcoming film Nine. Penelope and Javier Get In Thanksgiving Spirit With Sean Penn

30 November 2009 2:00 AM, PST | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem may not be from the United States, but they celebrated Thanksgiving with their friend Sean Penn this year. The couple stopped off for gas and drinks before arriving at Penn's house for the holiday feast. Penelope has been busy on the promotional campaign for Broken Embraces and the upcoming Nine, but she always manages to avoid questions about her relationship. Still, there are rumors that she's been wedding dress shopping after being spotted wearing a ring on a certain finger recently. Whether or not that ends up being the case, Penelope and Javier's love of privacy doesn't preclude them from taking in an American family tradition together. View 2 Photos › »

Clip joint: gangs

26 November 2009 6:41 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

This week on Clip Joint, AJBee tries to rouse the rabble as he turns the spotlight on cinema's best gangs

In a world that's falling apart – or even just coming apart at the seams a little – we all need others to cling to for support. Strength comes in numbers, but also in togetherness. In cinema we can see that tribal feeling from 2001: A Space Odyssey's prehistoric man to the gangs of 60s Glasgow, or 80s Brighton. The protruding foreheads remain, only the accents alter.

Gangs provide a sense of belonging and identity, as well as protection from foes. They can also exclude, as so many high school-set teen flicks testify. We wrap our modern tribal behaviour in colours and call it sport, which begat other kinds of gangs, too often lionised in modern British cinema. But gang culture is common to every echelon of society, from the streets »
