Damian Harris spent the better part of two decades researching child abductions for Gardens of the Night, a fictional saga about one young girl's ordeal after being snatched away from her parents at the tender age of 8. That dedication to getting the details right, however, doesn't save his film from missteps typical to stories about such topics, as the tendency to exploit lurid material for dramatic purposes is something he can't avoid. Still, as a serious-minded attempt to trace both the literal and psychological means by which abductors carry out their plots, Harris' tale is not wholly without merit and, with regards to its portrait of kid-snatcher Alex (Tom Arnold), occasionally flirts with complexity. Generally refusing to simplify characters or scenarios, his film strives to burrow into the mind of captured 8-year-old Leslie (Ryan Simpkins), who - in an extended flashback instigated by 17-year-old Leslie's (Gillian Jacobs) lies about her

Actor Tom Arnold is drawing on his own painful experience of sexual abuse as a child and turning it to his advantage for a role in new movie Gardens Of The Night.
The comic plays Alex, a paedophile in the harrowing drama, about a young girl who endures years of abuse at the hands of captors after being kidnapped from her family.
Arnold was just four years old when his 19-year-old male babysitter started molesting him, and he suffered for three years before the horror finally stopped.
He has since made peace with his past and now admits that his own experiences have helped him to fully develop the character.
But it wasn't an easy decision to take on the project.
Arnold, 49, says, "It was a tough choice. I was a smart kid, and (my molester) still got to me. So I wanted to portray a paedophile in a way no one has seen before in order to explain how these things can happen. I even wore the same clothes as him in the movie. Showing this guy meant so much to me."

Actor Tom Arnold was abused as a child by his male babysitter.
The comedian, 49, has revealed he was molested by a 19-year-old from the ages of four to seven as he was growing up in Ottumwa, Iowa.
He tells People magazine, "(The abuse) started shortly before I turned 4. This guy would babysit me three or four times a week. He wanted me to play a game, and he wanted me to learn it so I could play it every time. I knew it was weird and I was scared, but I didn't know what sex was."
Arnold kept the abuse a secret from his parents - because the unnamed babysitter bribed him with sweet treats and threatened to hurt his dad if the news ever got out.
He adds, "The guy gave me a candy bar at the end of the game. I wasn't allowed to have candy at my house, and I felt ashamed that I took the candy. And I was afraid of him. The message was clear he would hurt my dad if I told, and the thought of losing my dad was impossible."
But the abuse finally came to a stop after three years when Arnold made a threat of his own against the teen.
He explains, "There was an incident when I was seven. The guy had showed me his gun and aimed it at my dad one day when he arrived home from work. A few days later, I stole my dad's gun and went out in the middle of the street, waived it around and pointed it at his house. It caused a stir in the neighbourhood to say the least. After that, I think it slowly stopped. I remember it as him moving away. "
But Arnold, a reformed addict, is now ready to put his painful past behind him - after tracking the man down and confronting him over the abuse: "During my last week of drug and alcohol rehab in 1990, I told what had happened to me for the first time... With the help of a private investigator, I found him and confronted him at his office. Coming out of the building, I felt pure joy."

To portray a child molester in a movie is a risky career move for any actor. But for comic actor Tom Arnold, 49, accepting the role as Alex in the new movie Gardens of the Night was more than a role: It was his attempt to finally put his own past as a sexually abused child behind him. From ages 4 to 7, while growing up in Ottumwa, Iowa, Arnold says he was sexually abused by a 19-year-old male babysitter. He opens up about the experience in an interview with People: Why did you want to play Alex in Gardens of the Night?

With the fall season's heavy hitters already starting to make an appearance, this week's feast of indie offers some calm before the big studio storm. Enjoy it while it lasts.
Celebrated Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-wai gathered together lost and damaged footage to painstakingly rework his only martial arts epic, first released in 1994, into a fresh, definitive edition (complete with an all new score from Yo-Yo Ma). With a blindingly colorful palette, Wong paints a looping, stylized portrait of an embittered agent Ouyang Feng (the late Leslie Cheung) who channels the unbearable pain of a broken heart into commissioning bounty hunters to commit acts of vengeance. Tony Leung Ka Fai, Maggie Cheung, Carina Lau and Jacky Cheung round out the still-impressive cast.
Opens in New York and Los Angeles.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger turned to actor pal Tom Arnold when he was recently left stranded in the Middle East ahead of a crucial speech.
Arnold found himself delivering his True Lies co-star's speech to 60,000 members of California's Chamber of Commerce, and he couldn't resist the temptation to preach against the proposed ban on gay marriage in the state.
Thee-times-divorced Arnold explains, "He was stuck in the Middle East. There was a big speech for 60,000 people. He said, 'The speech is already written, you just have to go up there and say the words.'
"But I wanted to make it a bit more 'me' and I was thinking about gay marriage, which is a hot button subject, as it turns out.
"So I said, "I'll be honest. I'm for it. Even if you don't like gay people. You should vote for this. Marriage isn't that great. If we have to get married - why shouldn't they.'
"And then I moved onto the economy, and I was saying, 'Gay weddings... think of the money. All the flowers. Have you seen their parades? They're the best parades ever.' You could see their eyes light up. They could see the dollar signs. There was a groundswell and I got a standing ovation from republicans and democrats.'
"The only person who's now against gay weddings is my gay brother. He said, 'Great. Now I'm going to be alone and broke like you.'"

True Lies star Tom Arnold has urged his peers to stay out of the feud between actors unions and the movie studios - because their comments aren't helping resolve issues and thwart a strike.
The movie star insists recent public comments made by the likes of George Clooney, Tom Hanks and Sean Penn only serve to hinder union bosses as they attempt to work out new deals on working conditions and royalties for their members.
Arnold feels sure there will be no actors strike - as long as union bosses are allowed to do their job without the input of outspoken stars.
He says, "We've got to let our people do what they're doing... You know, when the actors start getting involved and taking sides and giving opinions... just let these guys at the union work it all out.
"I wish that the actors would just shut up, especially if you're filming in Rome, and that's not a slam on Tom Hanks, because I'm in his movie. I love him.
"Everything is going to be fine."
