Review of Bertrand Bonello's On War (De La Guerre)

11 November 2008 9:27 AM, PST | From QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news

Year: 2008

Release date: Unknown

Director: Bertrand Bonello

Writer: Bertrand Bonello

IMDb: link

Trailer: link

Review by: Bob Doto

Rating: 8 out of 10

“Everything in war is very simple. But the simplest thing is difficult.”

—from On War, Carl Von Clausewitz’s early 19th century military treatise

Spiritual disciplines span the spectrum from quiet personal self-reflection to physically militant offensives against the ego that tyrannizes us all. Writer/Director Bertrand Bonello’s latest film On War deals with the latter.

On War is a film about purging—the purging of self, of attachment to the world, and of attachment to assumptions about one’s self in the world. As the characters in the film suggest, it is only through this purging that a person may fully release into the immediacy of joy and pleasure. And it is joy and pleasure, things real and authentic, that our protagonist Bertrand (Mathieu Amalric) is searching for.

Of it, Collider reported that director Rob Cohen has revealed the matter through a recent interview saying, "We met the writers yesterday and we're trying to get into production by late spring, to have it out for the summer of 2010."

Concept art for Isidro Ortiz's next flick Naumon

28 August 2008 4:27 PM, PDT | From QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news

Isidro Ortiz did the fantastic film Eskalofrío (Shiver) which we reviewed here and it seems the Spanish horror site Aullidos just got the scoop on his next project. The film is based on a book by Amelie Nothomb in which a reality show called "Concentration" picks up random people off the street and dumped onto a big tanker out in the ocean from where the viewers at home get to watch them fight between each other and the guards (presumably). It looks like it's getting ready to roll, but apparently Ortiz is trying to pick up none other then Asia Argento to star in it. Yeah, I'll watch it! Art after the break.

Shiver Helmer Preps Naumón

28 August 2008 1:30 AM, PDT | From DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news

Dark Sky Films has picked up Isidro Ortiz’s Shiver, about an adolescent whose relocation to an isolated village with his mother is tainted when he becomes the main suspect in a series of shocking events. We’ll be seeing it soon then (it’s playing during HorrorHound Weeekend, if you’re going), and today Aullidos got word on the director’s next outing, Naumón.

Based on the controversial novel by Belgian author Amelie Nothomb Sulphuric Acid, Naumón will follow a faux reality show called “Concentration”, in which random people are picked up off the streets and dumped onto a freighter drifting through the ocean. Their fates are decided by the viewers at home, and needless to say, few of them make it out alive.

The title refers to the name of the boat the contestants will be on, which is evident from the concept art Aullidos got its hands on.

Dario Argento's Mother Of Tears DVD Art!

9 July 2008 4:31 PM, PDT | From iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news

I love Dario Argento. I love Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni. I love screenwriters Adam Gierasch & Jace Anderson. Hell, I even love Udo Kier's over-the-top performance, as well as the crazy gore and the wacky coven of witches that looked like they came straight out of the 80's and were headed to a Siouxsie and the Banshees concert! But Mother Of Tears is by far the worst performance of Asia Argento's career. Regardless, I'm a completest and will add it to my DVD collection on September 23rd when it's released by Genius Products! And now I know what it'll look like! The DVD cover artwork is below! And to check out clips from Mother Of Tears, click our previous news post Here!

As the temperature rises, romance blooms amongst the geriatric set, "Mary Poppins" goes Bollywood, and parents will get their first chance to lay eyes on that which will likely have them driving to Toys "R" Us all summer long.

"Elsa and Fred"

Seeing anyone under 30 fall in love on screen is elusive these days, and so director Marcos Carnevale's gentle and endearing tale of romance between a couple with a real-life combined age of 176 is quite the breath of fresh air. In a role that nabbed several awards in his native Spain, Manuel Alexandre stars as Fred, an embittered widower whose chance encounter with Elsa (China Zorilla), a mischievous Fellini fanatic, leads the pair to Italy to fulfill her dream of reenacting the famous Trevi Fountain scene from Fellini's "La Dolce Vita." The Films of Chris Marker, "Boarding Gate"

I'm sorry, but if my choices are superheroes, Sarah Jessica Parker's handbag materialism, Ashton Kutcher, learn-to-love-again indies and an Adam Sandler comedy that couldn't even muster enough jokes for a two-minute trailer, then I'll stay home and have a conversation with Chris Marker. I'll at least be assured of having truthful contact with a real human consciousness, of having learned, of having been made aware of cultural connections no other artist would make and of bearing witness to first-hand history. An integral soldier in the French New Wave, Marker is famous here only for "La Jetée" (1962), the beloved all-stills time travel mega-short that was remade by Terry Gilliam as "12 Monkeys." Though he's remained a prolific manufacturer of cinema into his 80s, he's never been a meta-acrobat like Godard and Resnais and Rivette, nor a romantic ironist like Truffaut or Rohmer or Demy, and it's been virtually impossible to see his films,

Author Harlan Ellison is widely regarded as one of the finest writers of the 20th century. He is also, as this documentary readily highlights, abrasive, petulant, egotistical and prone to fits of belligerent rage. Collecting together more than two decades worth of footage and interviews, "Grizzly Man" producer Erik Nelson lifts the dust jacket off one of literature's genuinely larger than life characters and a man who has filed more lawsuits than the Aclu, proving that sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction, even Ellison's sci-fi tales.
