Telluride Showcases Best of Cannes, World Preem for The Last Station

4 September 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- Grabbing the best from Cannes' In Competition titles (A Prophet, Bright Star, Fish Tank, White Ribbon), a sampling of Venice items (Bad Lieutenant, Life During Wartime, The Road) with a bit of Sundance and Berlin thrown in for good measure, Telluride is stealing a little bit of that North American premiere thunder from Tiff. They haven't got many world preems, today's press release only mentions Michael Hoffman's The Last Station, but that could all change – as the festival has some surprises in store for patrons (this would be a good time to bring out All Good Things into the Oscar mix) and everyone is expecting Jason Reitman to show up. We are checking his twitter status. I've never been to Telluride, but Firstshowing.net's Alex Billington and Slashfilm.com's Peter Sciretta often tell me I'd love it there (check out their sites for updates) and judging by the slate this year, »

What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #6

30 August 2009 2:58 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Outside of seeing three films in theaters this week I also took in nine titles at home including films from Akira Kurosawa, Roman Polanski, Claude Lelouch and two from Chan-wook Park. It's a mixed bag going from a movie about a girl with a machine gun arm to a film from the French New Wave. As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. Now, here's the recap of my week in movies... The Machine Girl (2008) Quick Thoughts: I can't remember which one of the Netflix friends I have had this in their queue, but I saw it and noticed it was on Instant Play and just had to give it a watch. I mean, at 96 minutes who wouldn't want to give a movie about a girl with a machine gun on her arm a chance? Well, I gave it a chance and must say, »

6 August 2009 8:51 AM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

The ballots are in! While fashion has always had its politics, this year’s International Best-Dressed List includes Barack and Michelle Obama, Michael Bloomberg and Diana Taylor, and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, alongside Hollywood stars (Brad Pitt, Penélope Cruz, Daniel Craig), royals (H.R.H. Princess Letizia of Asturias), and businessmen (Arpad Busson, Alejandro Santo Domingo), among others. Now it’s your chance to get in on the vote. Which outfit looks best on today’s honoree? Plus: See photos of everyone who made the Best-Dressed roster. The fashion items that actress Penélope Cruz, 35, can’t live without? “Jeans and T-shirts.” When she’s in Los Angeles she likes to shop at Maxfields, while Exseption is her luxury boutique of choice in Madrid. Meanwhile, Cruz, whose style icons are Audrey Hepburn and Anouk Aimée, cites her favorite up-and-coming designers as Haider Ackermann and the Row. Look for her wearing Christian Louboutin shoes, »

Lelouch Spans the Decades with 'Ces amours-là'

11 June 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- This week Claude Lelouch began lensing Ces amours-là, his 45th film is you can believe that. Filmed in parts of the Beaune region in France and in Romania's Bucharest, the picture is said to be some using vintage footage that Lelouch filmed over the past decades to compliment a story about one woman's romantic life. Audrey Dana (who was among the trio of leads in Lelouch's previous film Roman de Gare) plays the woman who reflects back the flings she had with a pair of French men, two Americans and a German. The film follows her over a twenty year span between 1940 all the way up to 1960. Looking at the time period, I'm guessing that the 2nd World War might offer on of the backdrops to one of the five narratives. Dana is re-teaming with Dominique Pinon and the film will also see legend Anouk AiméeJudith Magre, Christine Citti, »

Playing it Straight

7 April 2009 6:31 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

While Sean Penn’s recent Best Actor Oscar win for Milk helped bring Harvey Milk’s message to a wide audience — both from the increased visibility of the film and from Penn’s moving acceptance speech — the occasion marked another instance of a Hollywood tradition: a gay character played by a heterosexual actor.

Penn, like Tom Hanks (Philadelphia [1993]) and William Hurt (Kiss of the Spider Woman [1985]) before him, was praised for his “bravery” for taking on the role and even — eek! — kissing another man.

Gay actors, on the other hand, get no such credit for playing gay roles; let’s not forget the year that Rupert Everett’s hilarious supporting turn in My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) was ignored by the Academy, with the implication that queer thespians need merely show up to play queer characters, with no actual acting involved. (To add insult to injury, that same year saw »
