Before we get into this week's releases I thought I would alert you to an upcoming 50% off Criterion Collection titles at Barnes and Nobles beginning on November 10 and running for two weeks. The full details, and a $5 off coupon, can be found in the DVD Talk forums.

Wings of Desire (Criterion Collection) This is a huge week for major title releases on Blu-ray as Criterion's release of Wim Wenders's Wings of Desire is just the first of three titles I reviewed and most likely blew my word count for the next two weeks trying to get all of my thoughts squared away.

As for this title specifically, it was my first time seeing it and as it played on and on I began to enjoy it more and more. However, if you read my lengthy review, you will »

How Does Jim Carrey Playing Multiple Roles in 'A Christmas Carol' Benefit the Film?

26 October 2009 1:22 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The idea of one actor playing multiple characters in a film isn't a new one even though many people begin and end the conversation with Eddie Murphy for his performances in films such as Nutty Professor and Norbit all while forgetting the comedy he brought us in Coming to America.

Before Murphy we had the likes of Mel Brooks in History of the World and Spaceballs, Alec Guiness in the fantastic Kind Hearts and Coronets and Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove. Outside of Murphy it seems only Mike Myers has endured the same kind of ill treatment, primarily for taking the joke to the point it wasn't funny any longer (debatable) in the Austin Powers films and then dropping the bomb that was The Love Guru.

Looking at the performances listed above I am reminded of some classic films as well as a couple that missed the mark, but we »

What would be your dream movie poster mash-up?

24 October 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This is an ingenious update of the movie trailer mash-up craze – mashed movie posters created by English newspaper The Daily Telegraph. Dr Strangelove Actually made me chuckle seeing Peter Sellers tied up in that cutesy Richard Curtis bow. The joy is in the details -- Tinkerbell with a Pulp Fiction cigarette, the Alien head on E.T.’s moon. The unlikeliest combo is Kes (Ken Loach’s classic tearjerker about a working-class schoolboy and his bird) crossed with actioner Transporter 3. Hmmm...I’d love to see Sex and The City done Breakfast at Tiffany’s style…or how about »

The Family That Slays Together: Ten Domestic Slashers

15 October 2009 9:27 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

If you feel like you've seen this week's new slasher flick "The Stepfather" before, you probably have, even if you're not a fan of the 1987 original starring "Lost"'s Terry O'Quinn. That's because the family-bands-together-to-fend-off-the-one-member-who-turns-on-the-rest trope is at the heart of dozens of horror movies.

Need proof? Here's a list of ten different types of immediate and extended family members and a notable cinematic example of each going medieval on their loved ones.

Killer Mom

I'd wager that everybody has said "My parents are crazy!" at least once in their lives. But the filicidal mother in 2008's "Baby Blues" is so far gone into Crazytown that she'll make you want to call your own mom to apologize for ever implying she was nuts. Colleen Porch plays the killer in question, an exhausted mother of four with a truck-driving husband, who snaps one day and begins picking off her own children slasher movie-style; at one point, »

Things are getting serious between Katy Perry and Russell Brand. After being reported vacationing together in Thailand, the alleged new lovebirds were rumored spending night together at his North London pad.

On Saturday, October 3, the "I Kissed a Girl" hitmaker was snapped going out from Brand's home. She was then followed by the 34-year-old comedian, who was seen carrying her suitcase. Leaving his house, Perry was said heading to the Eurostar in Kings Cross, London.

Recently, Katy Perry and Russell Brand were said going to Thailand together after both of them were caught tweeting about their holiday in the Asian country. "After a week in magical Thailand I'm ready to face the real world again - been schooled on Morrissey, Oscar Wilde and Peter Sellers ... inspired," she tweeted. As for Brand, he took to his Twitter account, writing "I'm in Thailand, is it right for non Buddhists to visit temples? »

Katy Perry and Russell Brand Rumored Hooking Up in Thailand

2 October 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Katy Perry fuels speculation that she has a special relationship with British comedian Russell Brand. The rumored lovers are said going to Thailand together after they were caught tweeting about vacationing in the Asian country.

On Tuesday, September 29, the 24-year-old songstress took to her Twitter page, writing "After a week in magical Thailand I'm ready to face the real world again - been schooled on Morrissey, Oscar Wilde and Peter Sellers ... inspired." On the same week, Brand wrote in his Twitter account, "I'm in Thailand, is it right for non Buddhists to visit temples? Is it ok to snog the statues?"

Rumor of Katy Perry dating Russell Brand first emerged on September 13, during when both of them were reported canoodling at a party which was held by Lady GaGa after 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

Katy Perry and Russell Brand Said Hooking Up in Thailand and London

2 October 2009 8:08 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Speculation that Katy Perry and Russell Brand are dating is escalating yet again after both of them tweeted about holidaying in Thailand. The story, which is brought forth by The Sun, adds fuel to endless rumors claiming they have a secret fling which first emerged following their on-stage performance at this year's MTV Video Music Awards last month.

It was after the awards show that Russell was reported sending her a love poem with an accompanying note that read, "Please send me a poem back." Katy, in response, sent him a picture of her breasts, scrawling the word "poem" across it. Amazed by her, the British actor immediately whisked Katy on an exotic trip to Thailand.

On Sunday, September 27, Russell tweeted, "I'm in Thailand is it right for non Buddhists to visit temples? Is it ok to snog the statues? Or claim to be the reincarnated Sidartha?Help!" Three days later, »

Katy Perry Teases 'Huge News' On Twitter

1 October 2009 2:15 PM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Isn't it bizarre that we've gotten to the point where we get nervous when normally Twitter-heavy celebrities take a bit of time out from sharing their personal lives via the Internet? There was that post-vma period when Taylor Swift took some time off from tweeting, and Trent Reznor's frequent exits from the service became news every time he stormed off. Recently, Katy Perry took a vacation to Thailand and disappeared for about a week.

She returned to the service last night to praise Thailand, Morrissey and Peter Sellers. Her second tweet, though, is the one should raise a few eyebrows. "I've got a secret. Huge news coming in a couple days!" she wrote. She even preempted the inevitable speculation, adding, "No, my ego is not prego. Next!"

But what could Perry be talking about? A new album? Her next tour? Something else entirely? When MTV News caught up with »

Credits Report: Kiss Me, Stupid

23 September 2009 12:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Here in Austin, the Billy Wilder movie Kiss Me, Stupid is playing tonight as part of a series about Wilder's later films, and I suspect I am driving people crazy, trying to convince them to see it with me. I may have scared a local filmmaker at a screening of Wilder's One, Two, Three a couple of weeks ago, urging the poor man -- whom I hardly know -- to return for this film.

Kiss Me, Stupid is often considered one of Wilder's worst films, a smutfest from 1964 that helped end the Production Code in Hollywood, a black-and-white comedy that is the opposite of the sophisticated sex comedies of the early 1960s (Doris Day and that crowd). It might have been a very different movie with its original lead actor, Peter Sellers, but he was ill and had to be replaced by Ray Walston. And yet there's something about this »

In a World Starved For Great Comedy, Why Not Revisit Some Stellar Sellers?

22 September 2009 11:55 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Earlier this month the British actor/comedian Peter Sellers, best known to the world as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau in the “Pink Panther” series, would have turned 84. Wouldn’t life be brighter if this comic genius hadn’t left us so soon? As it was, we lost him close to thirty years ago, due to a weak heart further compromised by the stress of work, celebrity, and various personal upheavals.  I confess I’ve never seen Geoffrey Rush’s portrayal of him in “The Life and Death of Peter Sellers” (2004), but gather this biopic affirms much of what I’d already read about the man: that he was indulged by a doting mother; that he grew up knowing that he preferred pretending to be other characters than to explore and develop who he really was, and that this  led both to a stunning career... »

Beatles nostalgia: Why I can't help loving 'Help!'

7 September 2009 12:35 PM, PDT | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

Last night I caught the Beatles winking and romping through Help! (as part of VH1 Classic’s nine-day Beatles retrospective). I was reminded of how much, as a kid, I used to love watching that movie, over and over again, on televison -- and also of how, as the years have gone by, it has never won much respect, since it's had to live in the shadow of A Hard Day's Night. It deserves to, of course. A Hard Day's Night (1964) is one of the greatest pop-jukebox musicals -- scratch that, one of the greatest movies, period -- ever made. (Here’s what I said about it when it was re-released in 2000.) It not only captured the sublime excitement of the earthquake that was the early Beatles but showcased the group as if they were gods at play. Released one year later, in 1965, Help!, in effect, was the sequel, a »

Night of the Dribbler DVD Dunking Next Week

4 September 2009 3:05 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Earlier this year I reported on Code Red DVD planning to release the never-before-seen 1995 slasher spoof Night of the Dribbler about a psycho in a basketball mask killing off a high school basketball team. At the time a release date was not set in stone. Now I find out that release date is next week, September 8th to be exact.

As Code Red DVD's website describes it:

Night of the Dribbler, a comedy slasher shot in 1995 but never released anywhere in the world, will make its world debut via Code Red DVD this summer! Some psycho wearing a basketball mask is killing off the high school basketball team, and it's up to the famous TV funnyman Fred Travelena to find the killer! In the vein of Peter Sellers films, Fred plays 3 roles in the movie! Canadian TV's Cold Squad's Gregory Calpakis also stars in this demented comedy horror film »

Can 'Machete' And Its Ridiculous Cast Stack Up To These Five Ensemble Films?

6 August 2009 11:30 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Buckets of blood, violence, foul language and mother-lovin' Danny Trejo aside, "Machete" boasts some serious assets in the form of its impressive ensemble cast. Some of the actors lining up for the Robert Rodriguez-produced "Grindhouse" spin-off include Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, Don Johnson and Steven Seagal. Seriously -- Steven Seagal! The same martial arts genius that brought you "Above the Law," "Hard to Kill" and my personal favorite, "Under Siege 2: Dark Territory"! Not to mention this little gem...

Assuming that all goes as it should, "Machete" is in a position to become one of the most enjoyable ensemble films of all time. The giddier I get about the news, the more and more I think about other classic ensemble movies that "Machete" will one day measure up to. For your reading pleasure, here are five slices from the never-ending ensemble movie pie.
