Remembering Tennessee Williams

9 November 2009 9:36 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Playwright John Patrick Shanley, referring to Tennessee Williams as a "gorgeous unstoppable beast," recounted an incident in a restaurant when he, a budding writer, maybe thirty feet away from the master dramatist, could not bring himself to say hello. Such is the power of "influence" that any person in theater would stand in awe of this writer of poetry, short stories and the extraordinary body of plays for which he is best known. Shanley was among two dozen speakers who paid tribute to Tennessee Williams at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine on Thursday evening, themselves a Who's Who of American theater: Vanessa Redgrave who had originated the role of "Lady" in "Orpheus Descending" read from "Not About Nightingales," Marian Seldes who created the role of Blackie in "Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore," Sylvia Miles performed her role,... »

Gerard Butler Cast in Ralph Fiennes' Shakespeare Film Coriolanus

4 November 2009 10:30 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Way back in February it was announced that actor Ralph Fiennes would make his debut as a director on a contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare's play Coriolanus. THR announces, from the on-going American Film Market this week, that Gerard Butler has been cast in the lead role opposite Fiennes, who will also be acting as well as directing. Butler will play Tullus Aufidius, commander of the Volscian army. He joins a cast that includes William Hurt, Eddie Marsan, Jessica Chastain and Vanessa Redgrave. The script was written by John Logan (Gladiator, The Last Samurai). Shooting starts in March next year in Serbia. Coriolanus is a play that's not often taught in schools and most people probably haven't read. It's set in the early years of the Roman Republic, however it sounds like Fiennes has contemporized it instead. The story follows Roman military leader Caius Martius, who returns home from »

Gerard Butler Joins Coriolanus

3 November 2009 11:14 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Ah, Coriolanus. That Shakespeare play about...Romans, isn't it? Something to do with wars and elections? But fear not if your lack of knowledge rivals ours, because Ralph Fiennes is directing a film version, and Gerard Butler has just joined the cast. The one that the Reduced Shakespeare Company don't bother trying to summarise (except through interpretive dance involving a small clockwork dinosaur) in fact follows a Roman general called Gaius Martius (Fiennes himself) who leads his city's armies to war against the Volsicans (from Southern Italy), some of Rome's most dangerous enemies in its early days. The leader of the Volsicans is Tullus Aufidius, who Butler is set to play, who considers Gaius a blood enemy and engages him in single combat. And that's all only in the first half. The play also stars Vanessa Redgrave in the crucial role of Volumnia, who persuades her son to run for »

Ralph Fiennes is making his directorial debut with “Coriolanus”, a can’t miss script from William Shakespeare (that 393-year-old dead guy is really going places). Fiennes will pull Shakespeare’s family-political tragedy (the two never seem to mix well in  Shakespeare’s plays) out of ancient Rome and into what’s being called a “contemporary version”.  Butler will play Tullus Aufidius, commander of the Volscian army from Shakespeare’s play and nemesis of Coriolanus (Fiennes).  Butler joins a cast that includes William Hurt, Eddie Marsan, Jessica Chastain, and Vanessa Redgrave. Blu-ray Review: Howards End (Criterion Collection)

3 November 2009 3:30 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

My experience with Merchant/Ivory Productions is limited to say the least as Howards End now marks the second film of theirs I have seen, with A Room With a View being the other. While elegantly made, A Room With a View didn't move me that much, but I can say Howards End did a lot to squelch my fears it too would bore me more than engage me. Criterion brings Howards End to Blu-ray following their previous two-disc DVD release back in 2005, and while the only new feature is a video appreciation of the late producer Ismail Merchant by director James Ivory, this is a film ripe for high definition.

Based on the novel by E.M. Forster, Howards End takes a look at class divisions in Edwardian England and the inheritance of England by the working/lower class. The film centers on the well-to-do Wilcox family and the relationship »

Howards End: Criterion Collection Blu-ray Review

29 October 2009 1:46 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

With a 40-plus year run resulting in over 30 motion pictures, Merchant Ivory productions is best known for period pieces emphasizing award winning sets, cinematography and adapted screenplays. For my viewing preferences, these facets were rarely compelling enough to make a movie worth sitting all the way through such that the thought of taking in a back-to-back marathon of their catalog is not something I would wish upon an enemy. The independent film company did hit their stride in the early 1990's with the one-two punch of Howards End (1992) and Remains of the Day (1993) both starring Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins. The former garnered Oscars for Best Actress (Thompson), Art/Set Design and Screenplay and is now brought to Blu-ray by Criterion.

Based on E. M. Forester's novel of the same name, Howards End is set against the backdrop of Edwardian England where two families highlight the clash of values within the decaying social system. »

Howard’S End Criterion Blu-ray Review

27 October 2009 10:27 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

To American audiences, the late producer Ismail Merchant and director James Ivory are best known for their trio of E.M. Forster adaptations - which is telling for careers spanning 40 years and nearly 30 films together (almost all with writer Ruth Prawer Jhabvala), making their Forster output roughly ten percent of their body of work. But then again, the names “Merchant and Ivory” are a sort of cinematic shorthand used to denote British films about boring people. My review of Howard’s End after the jump.

That’s not fair, it’s shorthand for particular literary works set at the turn of the century that depict the British class system in all of its repressive reputation, making it impossible for anyone to express their true feelings. To be fair, M&I’s Forster adaptations have been because of their most successful entries, with both A Room with a View and Howard’s »

Oscar... Now With More Spirit Fingers

Shankman's got spirit!

Do you follow the Oscar show news in the way you follow the Oscars? I don't so much, despite this life I lead constantly writin' about the awards themselves. I care who hosts to some degree but I tend to ignore the rest. But I found it interesting this week when director Adam Shankman (Hairspray) was named as one of the producers and his choreography skills were noted as a reason to be enthused about this assignment. At least he has a sense of humor about his, um, limited history with the big event I was one of Paula Abdul's 'Under the Sea' pirates," Shankman said. "The last time I was at the Oscars, I was in Lycra, with a pirate hat on. Shankman's presence must mean more musical numbers. I'm all for musical numbers provided they rehire Hugh Jackman as host. He was so fine last year. »

Ralph Fiennes has persuaded Gerard Butler to swap romantic comedies for Shakespeare - the Scottish actor has signed up to star in a new adaptation of Coriolanus.

Butler recently starred in The Ugly Truth and is set to romance Jennifer Aniston in The Bounty, but he is now preparing to test his acting skills alongside heavyweight thespians William Hurt and Vanessa Redgrave in the new production.

Fiennes will make his directing debut with the big screen adaptation and take the title role.

It won't be Butler's first time in Coriolanus - his first acting role was in a stage version of the Shakespearean classic. »

Gerard Butler Fights For Rome And Shakespeare Next

22 October 2009 4:20 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

I was having a conversation earlier this week with some movie friends and had to balk when someone described Gerard Butler as "great actor." Good actor, fine by me-- he screamed convincingly in a Speedo in 300 and managed a rage-filled American accent in Law Abiding Citizen just fine. But great? Not yet, buster. Apparently Butler heard me and his upping his game, as he announced on a Baltimore radio show, of all places, that he's getting ready to star in Shakespare's Coriolanus, alongside Ralph Fiennes, William Hurt, Vanessa Redgrave, and Jessica Chastain (Chastain will be featured in Terrence Malick's Tree of Life, which just got pushed back to a release date next year). As reported by Cinematical, Butler calls it "a passion project" for both himself at Fiennes, even though Butler isn't saying what his role will be. Fiennes is playing the lead, of course, and will be directing »

Gerard Butler Goes Shakespearean in 'Coriolanus'

22 October 2009 7:03 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, many of you feel my client Gerard Butler should be placed on movie star probation. In the light of new evidence, I plan to petition for a retrial as it would appear that Mr. Butler has abandoned romantic comedies in order to accept a role from England's greatest playwright. Yes, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, Butler is taking a role in William Shakespeare's Coriolanus alongside Ralph Fiennes, William Hurt, Vanessa Redgrave, and Jessica Chastain. Fiennes will be playing the lead and will be helming the adaptation in his directing debut, which was adapted by John Logan.

On a very awkward appearance on Baltimore Wjx, Butler revealed that his next role would be in Fiennes' adaptation, and he described it as "a passion project" for them both. He didn't specify which role he would be taking on, but I'm hoping it's Coriolanus' sworn enemy, »
