New Agers and Creationists should not be President

3 December 2009 9:30 PM, PST | blogs.suntimes.com/ebert | See recent Roger Ebert's Blog news »

New Age beliefs are the Creationism of the Progressives. I move in circles where most people would find it absurd to believe that humans didn't evolve from prehistoric ancestors, yet many of these same people quite happily believe in astrology, psychics, reincarnation, the Tarot deck, the i Ching, and sooth-saying. Palmistry and phrenology have pretty much blown over.

If you were attending a dinner party of community leaders in Dallas, Atlanta, Omaha or Colorado Springs and the conversation turned to religion, a chill might fall on the room if you confessed yourself an atheist. Yet at a dinner party of the nicest and brightest in New York, Chicago, San

Francisco and (especially) Los Angeles, if the hostess began to confide about past lives, her Sign and yours, and her healing crystals, it might not go over so well if you confessed you thought she was full of it.

Just announced! The Alamo Ritz New Year’s Eve Bash: The Apartment!

3 December 2009 12:55 PM, PST | OriginalAlamo.com | See recent AlamoDrafthouseCinema news »

Our second annual New Year’s celebration of classic cinema, cocktails and cuisine at The Ritz!!

2008’s screening of After The Thin Man was a true extravaganza, bringing together an incredible drinking/dining experience with one of the greatest film’s of Hollywood’s golden era. This year, we’re stepping it up with the flat-out greatest New Year’s film in the world: Billy Wilder’s 1960 masterpiece The Apartment, a brilliantly written, fast-paced, heartbreakingly hilarious adventure of a poor schlub (a young, bumbling Jack Lemmon) who just can’t steer things right to fall into the good graces of the most wonderful woman in town (a young, unbelievably charming Shirley MacLaine). In his way are an innumerable number of comic obstacles, including the great Fred MacMurray and Ray Walston as self-serving high-rollers content to kick dirt in the face of anyone who crosses them.

It’s a gorgeously shot, »

The Flickcast Presents: Western Wednesdays – ‘Two Mules For Sister Sara’

2 December 2009 3:30 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

I used to hate Westerns.  I live in the wide and rugged expanse of Colorado, grew up in the shadow of the Rockies, and see cowboy boots on a daily basis. Heck, I even did a volunteer stint at a western museum. I couldn’t stand watching films that were basically set in my own backyard, even if the days of gunslingers and posses were long gone.

Later, I finally came around. I can’t say when this shift happened — probably upon my first adult viewing of Lonesome Dove, or maybe even as recent as James Mangold’s remake of 3:10 to Yuma. But I suddenly found Westerns to be a lot of fun, and I’ve enjoyed going back and watching all John Wayne and John Ford offerings that I’ve missed due to my snobbery.

Because I’m the type of girl who overshares everything, I thought it »

Old Ass Movies: The Apartment

29 November 2009 1:27 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Every Sunday, Film School Rejects presents a movie that was made before you were born and tells you why you should like it. This week, Old Ass Movies presents: The Apartment (1960) Earlier in the year, a movie about a mall security guard chasing down a pervert came out to the mixed reactions of people shouting "genius!" from the back row and others shouting obscenities from somewhere near the middle. Observe and Report is the natural heir to a new lineage of dramatic comedies that has sprouted in the past decade (much to the horror of film marketers who have only two presets). The movement of comedic dramas or dramatic comedies has been a strong one, especially for audiences that got tired of the strict separation of the two that took place in the 1990s - sprinkled with a healthy dose of romantic comedies that required a box of tissues. Much like the great prognosticator of trends that »

This week's DVD and Blu-ray releases

27 November 2009 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Inglourious Basterds

DVD & Blu-ray, Universal

It's taken a decade for this to arrive (no time wasted on spellcheck, though), and Quentin Tarantino's epic second world war romp is the best thing he's done in ages. It's deceptively Tarantino-esque; just because it's a period piece doesn't mean he skimps on his trademark pop-culture references. It's just that here he geeks out not on Les Big Macs and exploitation movies but on 1920s/30s German cinema, which certainly separates the men from the (fan)boys. You don't need a diploma in German mountain movies to have fun with this, though. The tale, delivered in five generous interlocking chapters, is told masterfully. Just when you think one segment is beginning to outstay its welcome, a stylish twist is performed. Unusually for Tarantino, there's a good spread of performances too. Where his films normally play like a group of actors taking turns to »

Halfway House: Oh Suzanne-ah

3 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Halfway through the day we freeze a movie halfway through. What do we see?

Doris Mann: Have you known Suzanne long?

Jack Faulkner: Ah, lets see. we've known each other about a month. It seems like longer, though.

Doris: Oh, I know what you mean. I'm her mother and it seems like longer.Fifty minutes into Postcards From the Edge (1990), Jack (Dennis Quaid) has dropped by to pick up Suzanne Vale (Meryl Streep) for a date. Her mother (Shirley Maclaine) intercepts the man with the bedroom eyes ('and the living room nose and the kitchen forehead'). The performers are deliciously insynch with Carrie Fisher's rapid fire witticisms.

One of the reasons people get so invested in the Oscars is the joy that comes from arguing about whether or not the octogenarian institution got it right in any given year / category. When it comes to Postcards From the Edge, they got it very very wrong. »

Deadgirl Writer Now Set to Show Us How to Chop

26 October 2009 1:20 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Trent Haaga, writer of recent cult film success Deadgirl, just announced his directorial debut with the independent thriller Chop. Chop, a revenge thriller with a comedic edge in the tradition of Fargo and Oldboy, centers on a seemingly innocent young couple forced by a psychotic stranger to confront their duplicitous past.

Haaga optioned the script from co-writer Adam Minarovich, and polished it to be his first directing vehicle after working on 40 independent films as a writer, producer, and/or actor.

The Chop script was a hot property in Hollywood, nabbing its co-writer, Minarovich, a top agent within weeks of making the rounds. Haaga received offers from numerous production companies but secured independent financing after the 2008 Toronto Film Festival premiere of Deadgirl, allowing him to retain creative control of the project.

Chop is being produced by Chad Ferrin and Jeff Hamilton and stars powerhouse Indian actress Tanishaa Mukherji and newcomer Billy Bakshi. »

Slapstick Kids Entertainer Soupy Sales Dies at 83

23 October 2009 11:26 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

He may have been born Milton Supman, but he became Soupy Sales to an entire generation that grew up with his morning kids television show during the 1950s and 60s.  He might not have been Captain Kangaroo or Mr. Rogers, but his show was different and it left a mark on those who remember him from those days.  Soupy Sales died yesterday in the Bronx at the age of 83.

The best way to describe his show was slapstick goofy and 1960s hip.  He had guests like Frank Sinatra and Shirley MacLaine visit his set and he got A Lot of pies thrown in his face.  He talked to puppets sometimes, but they were cool and hip puppets.  Short of one small incident he avoided controversy and lived his life as a very joyful and happy person according to those that knew him best, as well as those who only watched him on TV. »

Soupy Sales, the boundary-breaking comedian who good-naturedly endured, by his count, more than 20,000 pies to the face, has died. He was 83.

The comic's anything-for-a-laugh pie-throwing shtick became his trademark, and stars including Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis and Shirley MacLaine took one in the face on the comedian's television show in the early 1960s.

His nerdy cool paved the way for such later comedians as Pee Wee Herman ...

George Lopez Talks The Talk ... Show

20 October 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | ChannelGuideMag | See recent ChannelGuideMag news »

George Lopez is having a very good year.

The presidential candidate for whom he spent much of 2008 tirelessly campaigning is now in office. His self-titled sitcom is a smash in syndication. His live comedy act sells out arenas. And he was among the first actors signed to Garry Marshall's upcoming Valentine's Day, an ensemble comedy starring a multigenerational who's who of talent from Taylor Swift to Ashton Kutcher to Shirley MacLaine.

So how is he celebrating this string of successes? By hosting a show in which everyone else gets to gab about theirs. Beginning Nov. 9, Lopez plans to reinvent the role of talk show host on Lopez Tonight , airing Monday-Thursday on TBS (HD). And, as he told us, the timing is downright serendipitous.

Congrats on the new gig! Did the show come about on the theory that not everyone is looking to be lulled to sleep at 11pm?

An Education From Oliver Stone

6 October 2009 8:19 PM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

From left: An Education star Carey Mulligan and Maggie GyllenhaalLast night, after the New York premiere of An Education, Oliver Stone asked me what I thought of Carey Mulligan's hair. As Jenny, the precocious English schoolgirl she plays in Lone Scherfig's film, Mulligan wore her hair long and dark, but she had since cut it pixie-short and dyed it red. Stone has cast her in Wall Street 2, which is currently filming in Manhattan. Having seen her triumphant performance at Sundance in An Education (which took home that festival's top award), Stone had no doubt that she could act, but he was curious to know what people would make of the 'do she'll have in his film. "Some people say it looks like Audrey Hepburn," said Stone, "but it's more Shirley MacLaine" in The Apartment. It was Maggie Gyllenhaal who reccomended that Mulligan chop it all off. "Valentine's Day" Trailer Shows Stellar Cast, But Why Is Julia Roberts Kissing Bradley Cooper?

3 October 2009 8:40 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Why do I always think Bradley Cooper is up to something when he smiles?

We first told you that Bradley Cooper was going to play a gay man stuck as a seatmate to Julia Roberts' Army doctor back in May, and we had a fantasy casting for his closeted football player boyfriend. We had a lot of good suggestions &#8212 that Hollywood chose to ignore for Valentine's Day.

But we didn't argue that much, because they cast McSteamy himself, Eric Dane in the role.

None of the set pics I've seen have Dane wearing a shirt.

They then proceeded to cast half of Hollywood for the movie, including Anne Hathaway, Topher Grace, Ashton Kutcher, Taylor Lautner, Taylor Swift, and Shirley MacLaine. Now we've got our first look at the movie. Take a look at the trailer:

A Single Actress (Julianne Moore and Oscar)

27 September 2009 10:49 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

There can be only one ...winner, that is.

This year's supporting actress contest (new predictions!), if you believe early hype, is down to Mo'Nique vs. ummmm? She's way out front for her abusive mother role in Precious. But with Julianne Moore's supposedly vivid contribution to Tom Ford's A Single Man newly exciting festival auds, we could see the redhead goddess nab her 5th career nomination. That's quite an honor, even if she never wins that elusive statue.

The Man That Got Away Keeps Getting Away

A couple of years ago I asked readers who the next Deborah Kerr would be. Which modern important actress will be forever appreciated but never fully embraced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences? Back then Kate Winslet was sort of gunning for the honor. Now that the English Rose has noisily moved into the winner's circle, the imaginary competition is back on. »

Mallika Sherawat, the Hissss actress, returned to India hiding behind a burqa in order to avoid the crowds having previously tweeted to her fans, "I will be in Indore. Come say hi my tweeps!" A local press photographer snapped her in the traditional outfit. "I repeatedly requested her to remove the burqa for a while and pose for a photograph, but she did not," he said, "So I took her snap in the burqa itself ."

But Mallika will not be staying in India for long and has established herself very much as part of the social scene in Hollywood.
