Weekend Weirdness: Until the Light Takes Us, Mad Dog Morgan, Aoki, Kooky Quentin Tarantino Ad, and a Date Movie Rap Anthem

5 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

It’s a crazy, mixed up world and we are thankful for movies, sans New Moon, that offer proof. Weekend Weirdness cocks its disoriented, nappy head to examine such flicks, whether in the form of a new trailer for a provocative indie, a review, or news of an excavated cult classic. The works discussed herein tend to make cinema a little more interesting, and in the best and worst cases do the same for life. In this installment: a doc on Norwegian black metal; a doc on the first Asian member of the Black Panthers; a forgotten Dennis Hopper outlaw flick from Down Under; and a dumb-catchy rap song from the Sudan about movies, birds and popcorn. With the possible exception of Forever21-styled country music a la Taylor Swift, no other music genre is as stigmatized and sensationalized by acts of church burning and murda as Norwegian black metal. »

1 December 2009 6:26 AM, PST | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Cinema Retro has received the following press release from the Jameson Cult Film Club, which is affiliated with Jameson Irish Whiskey:

The infamous eighteen-inch-high Stonehenge in rockumentary classic, This is Spinal Tap, has been voted the ultimate 'rock' cult film moment of all time by almost half (48%) of British film fans.

Dennis Hopper and the classic motorcycle moments set to Steppenwolf’s of 'Born to be Wild' in Easy Rider came a close second in the poll with 22% of the votes, followed by Bill and Ted's "excellent" guitar solo in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (19%).

The research, commissioned by Jameson Cult Film Club, which brings classic cult movie screenings to life via an immersive cinematic experience, also reveals that the music from 90’s movie Trainspotting is the favourite soundtrack of all time with almost 40 per cent of the votes (39%). In 1997, it was awarded 'best soundtrack' in the Brit Awards. »

Artists cast as saviours of British cinema

21 November 2009 4:06 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

After the success of Steve McQueen and Sam Taylor-Wood, the UK Film Council aims to fund debuts by a new crop of artists turned film-makers

First came Turner prize-winner Steve McQueen's gritty film Hunger, about the Ira prisoner Bobby Sands. Full of soul-searching and menace, it was the toast of the Cannes film festival last year. Next came the success this autumn of Nowhere Boy, artist Sam Taylor-Wood's uplifting biopic of the young John Lennon.

Now, following these unexpected triumphs, a queue of former young British artists, or YBAs, has formed, waiting to entertain the nation's cinema audiences. Among the aspiring directors are the controversial artists Jake and Dinos Chapman and the Turner prize-winner Gillian Wearing.

This week, in recognition of this line-up of potential talent, the homegrown cinema industry has announced that it is to start banking on the trend. The UK Film Council is to promote more »

Voicing Celebrity Concerns

20 November 2009 10:41 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Movie stars sell movie tickets, but do they also sell video games? The latest title to put this question to the test is "Brütal Legend," a new action-adventure title set in a heavy-metal land of mythic creatures and crushing tunes that stars Tenacious D frontman and "School of Rock" maestro Jack Black as the voice (and likeness) of its head-banging hero Eddie Riggs.

Developed by acclaimed designer Tim Schafer (of "Grim Fandango," "Psychonauts") with Black's creative input, "Brütal Legend" is a heavily hyped game that's invested a lot in the popularity of Black, who's not only touted in ads as the lead but who even has shown up on red carpets dressed as Riggs. More so than any other recent game, "Brütal Legend" has pinned its retail hopes on players' fondness for its lead voice actor, a decision that says a lot about the industry's desire to market their games around recognizable voice talent. »

Entertainment Weekly columnist Chris Nashawaty has done yeoman work in soliciting comments from some top-name directors, actors and writers who recall their memories of working for producer Roger Corman. The B movie king is finally being shown the respect he deserves, culminating with a special Oscar being bestowed on him for his remarkable achievements in film. Corman gave crucial first breaks to many directors and actors who went on to have great careers. In this article, homage is paid to Corman by Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Joe Dante, Jonathan Demme, Sylvester Stallone, Dennis Hopper, William Shatner, Richard Matheson and others. Gay of the Dead #28: The Lair, Season Three (Part 2 of 2)

18 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

What can I say about Sybil Danning that would be a surprise to anyone? Gorgeous, talented, fun to watch. In whatever project she appears, Danning is always completely committed. Watching her as I have over the years, I see not only chops, but a healthy sense of humor as well. I feel like she “gets it,” if that makes any sense. (And after this interview, I’m even more of a fan.) Courtesy of friend Fred Olen Ray, Danning joins all the vampire fun on The Lair in this third season.

Sean Abley: We’ve actually met very briefly—I moderated the Lair panel for the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in La months ago. I was incredibly intimidated by meeting you. You’re Sybil Danning! But you turned out to be very sweet, and even asked me if it went Ok afterwards. You’ve now worked with my friend Dylan Vox twice, »

New 'Space Invader' Movie Has Nothing To Do With The Game -- And Neither Do These Five Made Up Films

18 November 2009 3:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I've got good news and bad news, video game fans. The good news is that a "Space Invader" film is on the way. The bad news is that it has no connection whatsoever to the classic arcade game.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Iron Man 2" screenwriter Justin Theroux is set to pen "Space Invader," Fox's astronaut romantic comedy that has nothing to do with shooting down wave after wave of aggressive alien aircrafts via joystick and button mashing. Instead, "Space Invader" focuses on a man who goes to space after suspecting that his astronaut girlfriend is cheating on him with a fellow astronaut.

Don't get me wrong, this "Space Invader" premise is pretty funny, and Will Arnett's attachment to the lead role makes it even funnier. Still, why throw away the "Space Invaders" name on a romantic comedy, rather than reserving it for a future video game adaptation? »

Waterworld Blu-ray Review

15 November 2009 9:14 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Hollywood has figured something out, which is that even if you spend a shit-ton of money on a film, that in and of itself can attract an audience. It’s hard to look at the relative success of Waterworld at the box office as anything more than rubbernecking on the freeway, and it was worthwhile for many who had grown tired of Kevin Costner. My review of Waterworld after the jump.

Though somewhat stiff at times, Costner was the leading man of the late 80’s, even more so than Tom Cruise, with his sexual charisma and aw-shucks charm. No Way Out, The Untouchables, Bull Durham, and Field of Dreams said “hey world, check me out.” Then came Dances with Wolves, which won him a couple of Oscars, defeating the (now seen as obviously superior) Goodfellas. Some resentment sets in with success and the oddball A Perfect World, and the terrible »

The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (Acmi) presents Focus on Hopper's America. The program coincides with Dennis Hopper and the New Hollywood, a major exhibition at Acmi which looks at a formative era for film and art in America through Mr Hopper's life and work.   The corresponding film program is a complex archaeology of interlocking films, designed as a series of cinematic experiences that also provide a contextual backdrop to the exhibition. Presented in three parts, Focus on Hopper's America is a program of rarely seen works of new restorations including features, documentaries and shorts. Lennon, Manson and me: the psychedelic cinema of Alejandro Jodorowsky

13 November 2009 4:10 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The El Topo and Holy Mountain director thrilled the 1970s counter-culture. Now his crazed visions are turning on everyone from Santigold to Kasabian

Eyebrows, hopes and ceremonially lit bongs were all raised earlier this year with the news that Alejandro Jodorowsky was finally making another movie. The high priest of head-trip cinema, Jodorowsky blew the collective mind of the counter-culture with a handful of supremely odd movies in the 1970s, such as El Topo and The Holy Mountain, but despite continual promises and rumours, Jodorowsky's long-awaited return never seemed to materialise. In the meantime, his work has been seized upon by a new generation of hipsters desperately seeking out-there inspiration, as we shall see. This year, though, at the Cannes film festival, Jodorowsky announced he had raised the cash for his next movie. It would be called King Shot, and it would be a metaphysical western set in a desert casino, »

Top 7 Movies That Make The End of the World Sound Hilarious

13 November 2009 2:18 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

Somehow, the end of the world has become a form of entertainment. Instead of being scared out of our wits of apocalyptic thoughts, we enjoy plunking down $10 to watch them become realized by big budget blockbusters. Hollywood serves it up, however: whole cities are destroyed, hundreds of thousands of people die, the fate of mankind is brought into question, and sometimes, Randy Quaid becomes our savior.

Which brings us to a certain theme that has been continued through a legacy of doomsday movies – they’re funny as hell. More unintentional than not, these movies are loaded with goofy movie milestones that make the blockbusters seem like gargantuan scaled jokes, with their characters, dialogue, and special moments serving as a type of punch line. Many disaster movies seem to be plagued by an air of idiocy that moves from one big budget movie to the next, »

'2012' Is Old News: Hollywood Apocalypses Through The Decades

13 November 2009 1:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Today, Roland Emmerich's latest world-ending epic, "2012," hits theaters. John Cusack, Amanda Peet and their pals race around the world, beholding one scene of devastation after another as an eco-catastrophe tears the planet apart. The story's premise is built on the belief that the apocalypse will come in the year 2012, as foretold by the Mayan calendar.

Unfortunately for Mr. Emmerich, Hollywood has already trashed the lovely planet Earth roughly a bazillion times over. From viral outbreaks to zombie uprisings, global warming to alien incursions... the people of this world have seen, suffered through and been almost completely annihilated by any threat you can imagine. Looking back through Hollywood history, the world was wiped out countless times, and long before the year 2012.

The '60s

For any movies where the time of the apocalypse isn't specified, it's a safe bet that the action occurs in the "present day" in which the movie was made. »

Roger Corman: Scorsese, Stallone, Sayles, and other A-listers talk about the B-movie king

He gave life to teenage cavemen and candy-stripe nurses. Crab monsters and humanoids from the deep. T-bird gangs and towns that dreaded sundown. His name is Roger Corman. And on Nov. 14, he will receive an honor that no one would have predicted: an honorary Academy Award. The 83-year-old B-movie titan has made nearly 400 films as a director and producer. From the start, Corman was a magnet for hungry young actors, writers, and directors who would work for slave wages for the chance to make their first film. They called it the "University of Corman," and the alumni include Francis Ford Coppola, »

New Casting For Gus Van Sant’s Next, Which is No Longer Called Restless

13 November 2009 7:46 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Gus Van Sant's next film, which was called Restless until recently, has been sounding very interesting. It already stars Mia Wasikowska in a "complex tale of a teenage boy and girl who share a preoccupation with mortality." The film may not currently have a title (Restless wasn't the best name for this movie, anyway) but it does have a lot of new cast members, a couple of which bear very familiar names. THR reports that starring alongside Wasikowska will be Henry Hopper, son of Dennis Hopper. The two of them will play a young couple who, among other things, crash funerals as they try to deal with the death of Hopper's character's parents. Making the film a bit more weird is the spirit of a Japanese kamikaze pilot who visits and/or befriends Hopper's character. The ghost will be played by Ryo Kase. He's not a familiar name in »

15 Hilarious Japanese Commercials Starring Hollywood Actors

13 November 2009 6:32 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

The announcement that Quentin Tarantino recently starred in a Japanese Softbank commercial has been making headlines [1] around the web this week, and I am still not quite sure why people are making such a big deal out of it. It's no surprise that Qt is somewhat well-versed in Japanese culture and no surprise that he enjoys hamming it up for the camera either. More to the point, I don't think these goofy commercials are quite as detrimental to a celebrity's reputation as it once was believed. After YouTube and websites like Japander [2] spread them across the internet for the whole world to see, and Bill Murray poked fun at the practice in Lost in Translation, it's easy to see why the Hollywood elite shied away for a while. However, lately Japanese commercials seem to be back in vogue, and we are even starting to see domestic ads becoming more acceptable as well. »

Fisk will play Wasikowska's sister while other new cast members include Chin Han playing a doctor treating the girl, Ryo Kase as the spirit of a World War II kamikaze pilot who regularly visits the boy and Jane Adams as the boy's aunt.
