In a very surprising move, Ryan Reynolds has won the much-coveted lead role in Warner Bros. live-action version of Green Lantern. We reported earlier this morning that Reynolds was up for the role alongside Bradley Cooper and Justin Timberlake, but thought he'd be a long shot considering the fact that he was also gearing up for a solo Deadpool spin-off. But Green Lantern is definitely a better (and more popular) role for him, and Warners probably liked the fact that Reynolds comes with a nice healthy package full of good looks, charisma and physical force. Dude is huge, he's proven he can handle the superhero stuff (ie: Deadpool in Wolverine), and he's at that sweet spot in his career where something like this could turn him into the next Christian Bale.
Lantern fans will probably agree that he's the best choice, though I'm not crazy about actors who double-dip in the comics world,

With all the sometimes disappointing and questionable remakes, reboots and do-overs coming out of Hollywood these days, sometimes its nice to get news of a reboot and actually be happy about it. What am I talking about? Well, according to The Risky Business Blog, The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven and Transporter producer Steve Chasman are teaming up to bring Remo Williams (aka “The Destroyer”) back to the big screen.
According to the report, the producers have enlisted Charley and Vlas Parlapanides, who are currently writing the action film War of Gods, to take on the screenplay based on the first book in the massive Destroyer novel catalog — which was written by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir in the 70s and 80s. In case you’re not familiar with The Destroyer, it concerns New Jersey cop Remo Williams, who’s convicted of a crime he didn’t commit.
Williams is sentenced to the electric chair,

12 Rounds is either one of the best tributes to action films of the last two decades or a horrible rip-off with nothing unique to say or show – it’s a genuine toss-up. But even if you can’t decide whether or not 12 Rounds borrows too much or the right amount, one thing isn’t debatable: John Cena has no place acting. The movie itself has problems left and right, but what’s really proven by the time credits roll is that action stars don’t just require muscular bodies in tear-away shirts, some acting is required. Bruce Willis didn’t rock our faces off in Die Hard by just being tough as nails – no, instead he threw in some acting to make John McClane endearing and even funny.
Detective Danny Fisher (Cena) and his partner Hank Carver (Brian J. White) took down the wrong criminal on the wrong night, a

As a huge Johnny Depp and Christian Bale fan, I was curious when reviews started pouring in and friends kept talking to me about Public Enemies, since most of them felt mixed. I didn’t get it. How could a movie with Michael Mann directing, starring these two plus Marion Cotilliard, possibly be bad?
Let’s set the record straight here- this is not a bad movie. It’s very strong. But like any movie, it’s got some problems.
The film revolves around John Dillinger (Depp), a real-life bank robber in the 1930s, and his heists, robberies, escapes from jail, and love life. Along the way we get to know about his gang and the police hell bent on capturing him.
First and foremost, this movie is slow. While the bank robberies and car chases are action packed, loud, and fast paced, they are often few and far between.

Occasionally Hollywood cobbles together random members of the A-list to play family members on film, even if their genes obviously come from opposite ends of the earth. If the actors are good enough or if the chemistry is there, sometimes the combo can work, such as Ethan Hawke and Philip Seymour Hoffman as brothers in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead or Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor in Cassandra's Dream. Other times, it stretches credibility, such as Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman in The Darjeeling Limited. My all-time favorite oddball casting is in Sidney Lumet's Family Business (1989), with Sean Connery, Dustin Hoffman and Matthew Broderick playing grandfather, father and son. (Huh?) At the same time, there are actor combos out there

...oh, don't act like you don't speak of them often.
I don't think I'll be getting to "Best of the Aughts" until late this year or possibly March 2010 given what's sure to be a crazed Oscar season but I was looking over those old Actors & Actresses of the Aughts list (compiled to reflect 2000-2005 cinema) and realizing how much can change within four to five years of cinema. Halfway through this decade Meryl Streep hadn't yet reconquered the world, Christian Bale hadn't yet started alienating fans, Scarlett Johansson hadn't yet started boring people, Heath Ledger hadn't left us, Holly Hunter hadn't moved to the small screen, Jude Law's career hadn't receded, Maggie Cheung hadn't vanished...
Here's what the lists looked like in 2005

Well, not literally of course, but it sure did have a lot of shootouts. This movie starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger began with Dillinger breaking out prison to continue his infamous job as the # 1 bank robber, and public enemy # 1. He eventually found a girl he liked named Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard) to drag along into his messed up world. Meanwhile Melvin Purvis played by Christian Bale was assigned to be the leading man on the hunt to bring Dillinger down. After more banks robbed, all of Dillinger's friends getting shot up, his girl Billie getting thrown in prison because of him, and failed attempts by Purvis to capture Dillinger. Dillinger's fate was finally sealed by Purvis and his agents as they were able to finally close in on him with their new, advanced, tracking techniques of that time.

"Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" ended up taking an estimated $42 million at the domestic box office and tying "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," which has reached $591 million in worldwide ticket sales. Victory will be decided when the final numbers come in. Opening on Wednesday to get the jump on the holiday weekend, "Ice Age 3" brought in $67.5 million during the five days, nearly matching the $68 million opening of the previous installment (Ice Age: The Meltdown). The new 3-D movie dominated the world's box office, with the biggest opening ever for an animated film at $148 million. "Revenge of the Fallen" is now the highest-earning film of 2009 with a domestic total of $293 million in its 12th day in release. The only film to have amassed a higher gross in such a short time is "The Dark Knight." "Public Enemies," which also opened Wednesday, served as solid counterprogramming to the two tentpoles.

George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s production company Smokehouse Entertainment have left their longtime friends at Warner Brothers and have signed a two year contract with Sony. It kind of feels like strange timing after Sony just screwed over longtime collaborator Steven Soderbergh and his baseball docu-drama Moneyball. It kind of feels like the end of an era with this announcement. This was one of the great actor studio partnerships of the past 20 years. It began with the Clooney / Soderbergh company Section Eight. It included such intelligent adult fare as Good Night and Good Luck, Michael Clayton, Syriana, Far From Heaven, Insomnia, Criminal, and A Scanner Darkly. They would recoup their losses through The Ocean’s Eleven Trilogy. Whatever you thought about these films they took risks and tried to inject some originality and intellect into Hollywood. Their critical successes did outweigh the honorable failures (The Good German, Leatherheads). Section

#1 "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" ($42.5 million)
#2 "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" ($42.5 million)
#3 "Public Enemies" ($26.2 million)
#4 "The Proposal" ($12.8 million)
#5 "The Hangover" ($10.4 million)
The holiday weekend ends with the rarity of two films claiming the #1 spot and holding their breath for a Monday morning (July 6) recount. "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and 3-D toon "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" both earned an estimated $42.5 million over the Fourth of July weekend, though neither blockbuster could compete with fireworks and barbecues on the holiday itself. Though the box office enjoyed brisk sales to the tune of $152.9 million on Friday and Sunday, ticket sales took a steep nosedive on Saturday.
With a gross of $293 million and counting,

Dinosaurs and transforming robots have tied at the box office. The newly released Fox 3D animated film "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" has topped the box office weekend with last week's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."
Just like "Transformers 2," the third installment to the "Ice Age" franchise also opened on a Wednesday. It has an overall gross of .5 million, though its three-day weekend total is .5 million.
"Transformers" also got another .5 million added in its overall gross. It was down 61 percent from its ticket sales last week, but even with a great plunge, it still lords over other films.
Johnny Depp and Christian Bale's crime flick "Public Enemies" places third with .2 million during the weekend. Although, like "Ice Age," it also debuted on Wednesday; hence, it already has million overall gross.

A tight race for the #1 spot at the North American box office between "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" has been one hazy battle, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday, July 5. Collecting approximately $42.5 million each in ticket sales over the U.S. Independence Day holiday weekend, the two different genre movies left a rare tie at the chart. The final figures to be announced Monday, July 6, will settle a winner.
Since being opened in theaters Wednesday, July 1, the third "Ice Age" movie met most analysts' expectations and has earned in total about $67.5 million. Despite the tie condition, Bert Livingston of 20th Century Fox, the studio which released the "Ice Age" franchise, was happy with the result. "Given the great weather, and what a movie event Transformers is, we couldn't be happier with a tie for first," he said.
Through the competitive holiday frame,
