DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Toby Kebbell to Play John Wilkes Booth in The Conspirator

4 November 2009 3:57 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Our friends over at First Showing got an interesting little scoop this afternoon, picking up some casting news from Robert Redford's upcoming Lincoln assassination film The Conspirator. A friend of Fs' Alex Billington ran into RocknRolla star Toby Kebbell, who said that he was in town to work on The Conspirator and that he's playing John Wilkes Booth. For those who missed 6th grade history, Booth was the man that pulled the trigger on President Abraham Lincoln in Box 7 at Ford's Theatre on April 14, 1865. If this turns out to be true (all signs point to yes, as it's first hand), Kebbell completes a cast that includes James McAvoy, Robin Wright Penn, Frederick Aiken, Justin Long, Evan Rachel Wood, Alexis Bledel, Kevin Kline, and Tom Wilkinson. The film will follow the story of Mary Surratt (Wright Penn), the lone female charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination. "As the whole nation turns against her, she »

Casting Notes: Billy Bob Thornton Goes Faster with The Rock; Dannny Huston Seeks Justice for Lincoln Assassination; Jovovich Joins Psycho Thriller

27 October 2009 10:50 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

The casting news tonight is all over the place: First we have Billy Bob Thornton teaming up with Dwayne Johnson in Faster, a George Tillman Jr. (Men of Honor, Notorious) action drama vehicle. Johnson will star as Driver, an ex-con out for revenge  following his brother's murder. Thornton plays Cop, a (you guessed it) police officer tailing Driver. There's also Killer, a hitman who's after Driver for some reason (my god, maybe he killed Driver's brother?!). The latter role remains uncast. Danny Huston has signed on to Robert Redford's period drama, The Conspirator, as a prosecutor in the Lincoln assassination trial. The film will specifically center on Mary Surratt, portrayed by Robin Wright Penn, who was infamous as the lone female co-conspirator in the assassination. Huston will also be joined by James McAvoy as Fredrick Aiken, Surratt's reluctant defense lawyer, as well as Justin Long, Tom Wilkinson, and Kevin Kline. »

A Fish Called Wanda: The Musical!

John Cleese is turning 'A Fish Called Wanda' into a musical.

The 'Monty Python' comic has revealed his plans to turn the 1988 comedy movie about a jewel heist - which he wrote and starred in alongside Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Kline - into a stage production.

He said: "One thing I am doing which amuses me immensely is the musical version of 'A Fish Called Wanda'."

The 69-year-old star decided to turn his attention to the stage because he is bored of filming TV documentaries and sitcoms.

He is quoted as saying: "Unless you want to tie yourself up for five years, you basically can do interesting documentaries for which you don't get paid. And it doesn't make much sense doing comedy because once you've done 'Monty Python' and 'Fawlty Towers', almost anything you do people are always going to say, 'Well, it's »

Scream Fest 09: Review of The Tournament

Year: 2009

Directors: Scott Mann

Writers: Jonathan Frank / Nick Rowntree / Gary Young

IMDb: link

Trailer: link

Review by: Hal MacDermot

Rating: 7.4 out of 10

Once every seven years, thirty of the world’s most deadly assassins gather together and fight for the grand prize of ten million dollars – there can be only one winner, only one survivor.

Normally this genre of Battle Royale-esque movie is set on an exotic island, or a mystic m’larkey temple, and here’s why I knew I was in for something different right from the start, The Tournament is set in no-m’larkey-at-all working class Middleborough, in the rainy North of England. Scott Mann’s action packed debut feature stars Robert Carlyle as a drunken priest mistaken for a hitman, and the beautiful Kelly Hu as a real hit woman. For a $12 million budget, you get a good bang for your buck. There are a »

Wright Penn plays Mary Surratt, the only female charged in the conspiracy to kill the president, and McAvoy plays Frederick Aiken, the war hero assigned to defend her. Redford's 'Conspirator' Fills Out Cast, Starts Filming

18 October 2009 2:24 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

The Robert Redford historical drama The Conspirator has already begun filming with an eye on a 2011 release, to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The film stars James McAvoy as a young military attorney assigned to defend Mary Suratt (Robin Wright Penn) and comes to believe she's innocent of plotting to kill Abe Lincoln.

Several notable new cast members have been added this week. First there was Justin Long, which seems like a bad fit, Tom Wilkinson, which does not, English actor Toby Kebbell, Alexis Bledell, Kevin Kline, and now Evan Rachel Wood. There's no word on exactly what characters each will be playing, but in some cases, I'm not sure it matters. For example: You've got Tom Wilkinson. »

First Photos from McAvoy’s The Conspirator

The Playlist have debuted the first couple of images from James McAvoy’s new movie, The Conspirator which I’ve placed below (click to enlarge).

The Scottish actor has hit the big time at the box office bringing us some awesome films including Atonement, The Last King of Scotland and Wanted with Angelina Jolie. Wanted was so successful that he’s been signed up for the sequel which is due for release some time in 2011 with both Jolie returning (somehow!) and Timur Bekmambetov directing. It goes to show that McAvoy is currently hot property in the land of Hollywood.

The Conspirator is directed by Robert Redford and co-stars Robin Wright-Penn. It’s currently being shot in Savannah, Georgia and some of the readers of The Playlist have sent some images of the cast which they’ve found out also includes Evan Rachel Wood, Tom Wilkinson, Kevin Kline and Toby Kebbell. »

McAvoy is Frederick Aiken, her defender. Now we've got a bunch of new names: Tom Wilkinson, Evan Rachel Wood, Kevin Kline and Alexis Bledel are on board, as is Justin Long.
