Imagine that!  Roland Emmerich did another epic end-of-the-world flick, starring semi-respectable actors, and boasting a huge budget!  Doesn't this schtick get old Mr. Emmerich?

2012 features a paper thin plot about crazy solar flares in the few years leading up to the year 2012 that somehow turn the neutrinos in the Earth's core into microwaves that slowly, but steadily start heating up the planet.  This results in earthquakes, tsunamis, sink-holes and other natural disasters.  It's all pretty dehumanized until these things start to affect Jackson (John Cusack) and Kate (Amanda Peet), a divorced couple with two kids.  Oh, Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a bleeding heart, government geologist who advises the president (Danny Glover) on all this, and eventually (spoiler alert! »

Oscar MythBusting: One Day They'll Be Nominated!

2 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Most fans of established actors believe that one day their favorite will be nominated for an Oscar. In 2009 campaigns hopes are particularly high for Sandra Bullock, Alfred Molina, Colin Firth and Christopher Plummer. Fans of James McAvoy and Sam Rockwell still hold out longshot hope. But guess what? The odds are, generally speaking, against them on February 2nd (two months hence!) when the lucky 20 are called.

Most actors aren't ever nominated for the big prize. People seemed surprise to read in an old Oscar Mythbusting column I wrote years ago that the majority of nominated actors (approximately 67%) never receive a second nomination. But I did the research and it's true. Even less likely than a second nomination: a first one. Consider this...

The following (living) legends have still never been nominated despite rich bodies of work and several classic films or exuberantly praised performances: Mia Farrow, Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Plummer and Donald Sutherland. »

Oprah Winfrey hires Irish celebrity chef (IrishCentral)

2 December 2009 5:21 AM, PST | IrishCentral | See recent IrishCentral news »

Oprah Winfrey has chosen an Irish celebrity chef who cooked for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as her new website chef. Aine McAteer (54), from Cavan, has also cooked for Hollywood stars such as Robert Redford and Simpsons creator Matt Groening during her career. McAteer told the Evening Herald newspaper she was hired after bringing her own cookies to the interview and speaking about the famous names she has already cooked for. "I knew Oprah was starting a new tv network and that they were creating a new website for it. I was put in touch with a guy who was working on her website, and I brought cookies and a pack for Oprah," she said McAteer focuses on a macrobiotic diet cooking with whole grains and vegetables. She most recently worked for actor John Cusack on the set of his new film, '2012.' She first came to notice when working in Hawaii. »

[TV] Better Off Ted: The Complete First Season

2 December 2009 4:00 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

When they adapted Dilbert from a simple comic strip into a television show they had a good idea; they just executed it poorly. The ridiculous nature of bureaucracy and its system of ethics with a Gumbi-like flexibility make a perfect target for lampooning. Dilbert does it perfectly on the page, but when translated to a moving cartoon the humor suddenly falls flat. But it can be done. Other ventures have taken up the mantle of pointing out the ludicrous nature of big business (The Office, Office Space, etc.) and each has been more successful than Dilbert. I would dare to say that when it comes to the funniest take on “business as usual”, Better Off Ted beats the rest. Easily. Heck, it only seems fitting that a sitcom which draws its name from a hilarious John Cusack film should have equally perfect comedic timing.

Adam Lambert Offers His Song for 'Eclipse' Soundtrack

2 December 2009 12:58 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Adam Lambert would love to have his song included in the upcoming "The Twilight Saga's Eclipse". The singer who draws controversy due to his sexually-charged performance at 2009 American Music Awards thinks that Rob Cavallo-produced track "Suburban Decay", which didn't make it to his debut album "For Your Entertainment", will fit the third installment of the "Twilight" movie series.

He told MTV, "It's a great song and I hope to perform it someday, and I think it will find a home, on a soundtrack or something ... maybe 'Twilight'. It just didn't quite fit [in my album]. It's very theatrical. ... It's very campy, and it was just a bit too campy for the album as a big picture." Then, he added, "Hey, 'Eclipse' ... Want my song? It's kind of about vampires."

Previously, Adam Lambert has scored music for John Cusack-starring film "2012 (2009)". His song "Time for Miracles" is picked up as the lead single »

World AIDS Day, Pudgy 'New Moon' Werewolves And '2012' In Today's Twitter-Wood

1 December 2009 3:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

If you noticed an abnormal amount of red in your Twitter feed today, it's because much of the Twitterverse and Twitter-Wood population was observing World AIDS Day. Russell Brand, Paris Hilton, Virginia Madsen and Ashton Kutcher were among those tweeting for awareness -- though Brand predictably did so with lighter sensibilities.

In other tweetage, Rainn Wilson has officially attempted to sooth any offense John Cusack might have taken from a comment he made about "2012." Check out the exchange after the jump along with the "New Moon" wolf pack as you've never seen them before, an epic Stanley Kubrick book and Diablo Cody's kitty litter smell problems. I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter-Wood report for December 1, 2009.

Edward Cullen, stalker? Yes, but so is the hero of 'The Graduate'

30 November 2009 1:45 PM, PST | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

Is Bella Swan an independent and sort of daring young lovesick renegade…or a doormat? A good role model...or a godawful role model? Or should she be considered a role model at all? And what of the Twilight saga itself: Is it liberating the fantasy life of a new generation of young women by inviting them to wallow in the kind of stormy-skies, trembling-damsel romanticism that has been a staple of popular fiction from Wuthering Heights onward? Or is it setting back the holy cause of women's enlightenment by 50 years? These and other questions were debated, with rude and furious passion, »

Ghost House Pictures has a Panic Attack

30 November 2009 10:36 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

There is another robot film coming out, but before you groan, it doesn’t have Michael Bay (Transformers), McG (Terminator) or Shawn Levy (Real Steel) attached. This one is called Panic Attack has a director you’ve most likely have never heard of attached, Fede Alvarez. That name might not make your ears perk up (yet) but this one will: Sam Raimi.

Raimi’s production company Ghost House Pictures (Drag Me to Hell, 30 Days of Night: Dark Days) has won a bidding war between a bunch of major studios to sign a seven-figure deal with Alvarez to have him direct a feature-length film based on a 4 minute short he released earlier this year.

Fede Alvarez is a commercial director from Uruguay (small country in South America just below Brazil), and until now no one outside of that country had heard of him. That is, until Kanye West posted a link »

Blu-Ray Review: Remarkable 20th Anniversary Edition of ‘Say Anything...’

29 November 2009 2:04 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Sometimes fans have the choice between holding on to the standard DVD version of their favorite films or upgrading to the latest format, anniversary, or ultimate collector’s unrated fantastic edition. With many Blu-Ray releases merely improving the technical specs but often leaving the special features alone, it can be a tough call. Such is not the case with the 20th anniversary edition of the great “Say Anything…,” a release packed with excellent bonus material that make it a must-own for fans of Cameron Crowe’s directorial debut.

Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0

After breaking through with his script for “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” Cameron Crowe fell into the worst project of his career, a lackluster ’80s teen movie called “The Wild Life”. After that experience, Crowe told himself that he wanted to write something personal and real; a film that took the lives of young people seriously and not merely »

Review(s): 2012, The Informant, Harry Brown

25 November 2009 3:26 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Brevity is the new black. 2012 I enjoyed this film. It’s far too long, but it has no pretentions about its true nature. There’s no environmental message to chide the audience, so you can just sit back and enjoy the millions of dollars of CGI that makes up a majority of the film. Also John Cusack is cool and the fake Russian accents are hilarious. Not a particularly intelligent response, but this is not a particularly intelligent film. The Informant Have a guess how many people walked out of the screening of this film I went to see? Answer is at the bottom*. A chubby Matt Damon was on rather good form as the bipolar businessman working with the FBI to bring down corporate corruption in the corn industry. It’s better than the second two Ocean’s films, and it’s quite funny, but The Informant will be quickly forgotten. »

2nd Joel Silver Interview Ninja Assassin. Plus Info on Dark Castle Projects, Remakes, Sherlock Holmes, More

24 November 2009 8:49 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

At last weekend’s press junket for Ninja Assassin, I had the opportunity to speak with producer Joel Silver twice.  The first time was an exclusive TV interview, and the second time was during a roundtable interview the following day.  While I normally would be happy to use just one of the interviews, since Joel Silver is producing so many high profile projects (Lobo, Sgt. Rock, The Apparition), I knew getting to speak with him twice would be a good thing.

Also, what a lot of people don’t realize is how much info a producer can tell you.  While it’s always great to talk with an actor, unless you’re a Brad Pitt, most actors don’t have that much juice to get a project made.  So that’s why getting to speak with Joel Silver is so great, because not only can he talk about all his projects that are getting made, »

Nocturnal Admissions: 2012 versus The Box

23 November 2009 2:47 AM, PST | Quick Stop | See recent Quick Stop news »

Roland Emmerich is the Irwin Allen de nos jours, and his new film, 2012, is an anthology of disaster films past. It’s got a bit of Volcano, of Earthquake, of all the Airports, and even When Time Ran Out, not to mention The Bible, at least the part about Noah. But unlike those earlier films, 2012 is primarily a comedy. Sure, serious things happen, such as the near demise of the earth and the deaths of billions of people, but the story is told with a certain measure of wit, a wink to the audience that says this is all for fun. When you see elephants being hauled by helicopters to a modern ark, or when someone says, “I’m not going to let anything come between us,” immediately before a fissure opens up on the floor before him, you have to realize that the director and his fellow credited writer »
