Movie Review: “Pirate Radio”

57 minutes ago | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Seen on: November 5, 2009

The players: Director: Richard Curtis, Writer: Richard Curtis, Cast: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost, Kenneth Branagh

Facts of interest: Richard Curtis also directed "Love, Actually."

The plot: A group of radio pirates broadcast rock 'n' roll from a boat in the North Atlantic while the British government tries to shut them down.

Our thoughts: Board Richard Curtis’ new comedy “Pirate Radio” (formerly “The Boat That Rocked”), and you’re in for more than two hours of great rock ‘n’ roll and fabulous acting performances. The film is by no means perfect, but I admit it’s definitely not as terrible as some critics out there made it out to be. »

Geek Gossip: Thor, Superman, Rambo V

4 hours ago | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Zachary Levi, star of Us comedy Chuck, has revealed he was cast in Kenneth Branagh's Thor movie.

Levi, 29, was set to play Fandral, one of The Warriors Three, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts when NBC ordered six additional episodes of Chuck.

According to USA Today, the actor had initially been asked to audition for the lead in Thor but declined, saying: "I'm tall and in pretty good shape, but I'm not big and girthy like that."

In the next season of Chuck, he will be joined by guest stars including Smallville's Kristin Kreuk and Superman Returns actor Brandon Routh.

While we're talking Superman Returns, a new campaign has emerged calling for an Extended Cut of the 2006 movie.

The organisers want all the deleted footage reinstated, including the $11million 'Return to Krypton' opening sequence, in which the hero returned to the site of his homeworld »

Zachary Levi Turned Down Role in Thor for Chuck

10 hours ago | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The nerd-spy TV series Chuck faced down cancellation and came out victorious, even adding six more episodes to the thirteen already on order for its third season. Unfortunately, there was one casualty: series star Zachary Levi was forced to turn down an offer to play Fandral, one of the "Warrior's Three," in director Kenneth Branagh's live-action adaptation of the Thor comic book series, set to begin filming in January.

According to USA Weekend, the addition of six episodes caused a scheduling conflict that prevented Levi from accepting the role. Levi said that he had actually been asked to try out for the title role of the God of Thunder, as well, but declined.

I'm tall and in pretty good shape, but I'm not big and girthy like that.

Thor stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, and Anthony Hopkins as Thor's father, Odin.

Box Office Preview – Nov. 13 – 2012 looks to destroy the competition

13 November 2009 2:40 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

The only big film of of the week is 2012. It’s a mess of a movie about a mess. And it’s long.

Funny, I just watched a commercial for Pirate Radio, and it named Phliip Seymour Hoffman, January Jones and Kenneth Branagh as the three actors in the film. Jones has a cameo. It’s nice. But it’s a cameo. I thought you needed to know. It’s also in limited release so I don’t think it has enough juice to crack the Top 5.

Each week we’ll take a look at the box office and see if we can’t nail the Top 5 films (in correct order).

It’s harder than you think. If you don’t believe, let’s see what your answers are.

1. ‘2012′ – $55 million

Jeff Bayer’s Tsr – 3/10

2. ‘A Christmas Carol

Jeff Bayer’s Tsr – 6/10

3. ‘The Fourth Kind

Morrow McLaughlin’s Tsr – 7/10

4. ‘The Men Who Stare at Goats »

Marvel Studios Starts Shooting Thor in January

13 November 2009 8:04 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

This is basically TweetNews confirming a plan that was mentioned in May. Last night, Production Weekly said over Twitter that Marvel Studios would begin shooting Thor in January. With Kenneth Branagh's tale of the Norse thunder god on schedule and finally about to go before cameras, hopefully we'll soon see some production design, costumes and other materials. Meanwhile, here's a rundown of what we know so far. Kenneth Branagh is directing Thor from a script by Mark Protosevich. (IMDb credits Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz with script work, and I would guess that Branagh has done some rewriting at this point, too.) The plot has been reported as such: The movie’s story sees the god of thunder Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans. Once here, he learns »

What Can Zatanna's 'Smallville' Episode Teach Us About 'Justice League' & 'The Avengers' Movie Team-Ups?

13 November 2009 6:16 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Can Jon Favreau's reality-based "Iron Man" share the same universe as Kenneth Branagh's fantasy-focused "Thor"? What about the space-faring "Green Lantern" film and Christopher Nolan's gritty take on Batman?

These are valid concerns both for fans and movie executives as Marvel Studios and DC Entertainment plan live-action adaptations of "The Avengers" and "Justice League," respectively.

While they're difficult questions to tackle, some hint at the answers could lie in an installment of the television series "Smallville" (titled "Hex") which debuted last season. In "Hex," the powerful magician Zatanna interacts not only with the super-powerful Clark Kent, but also with Green Arrow, a street-level vigilante with no superpowers to speak of.

MTV News spoke with "Hex" writer Bryan Q. Miller (the new writer of DC's "Batgirl" series) to get his take on how to integrate magically-gifted characters into a live-action comic book world.

'Pirate Radio': Adrift, By Kurt Loder

Even Philip Seymour Hoffman can't quite float this boat.

Imagine you're a British teenager in the mid-1960s. The new breed of English rock is taking over the world. Across the pond in America, the Beatles, Kinks, Rolling Stones, Animals, Troggs and Yardbirds can all be heard around the clock on U.S. radio. Back at home, though, the government controls the airwaves, through the dowdy BBC, and the government has decided that no one needs to hear this unseemly music.

The new movie "Pirate Radio" trains a fond eye on the rebellion that this oppressive state of affairs spawned: an outbreak of rogue radio stations based on ships anchored just outside of British territorial waters. Radio Caroline was the first of these outfits to go on the air, in 1964, and it was soon joined by others -- »

Pirate Radio

Directed by: Richard Kurtis

Cast: Tom Sturridge, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost, Kenneth Branagh

Running Time: 1 hr 55 mins

Rating: R

Release Date: November 13, 2009

Plot: A rogue group of rock and roll deejays are on the high seas outside of England keeping music alive. This is the story based in some fact of a “pirate radio” boat that inspired 1960s Britain.

Who’S It For? Do you like music? More specifically, the rock and roll that truly mattered? Then you’ll love this. Beyond that though, this film is filled with a great cast of characters that provide enough laughs for any adult to enjoy.

Expectations: This is the director who wrote Notting Hill and directed Love Actually … but romance isn’t center stage. So I was hopeful, but not expecting much.

These films are listed in order of popularity at the moment I generate the script and it is both encouraging and upsetting which film is at the top and which film is at the bottom. While I am excited to see the readership is interested in seeing The Messenger I wish more of you would have been interested in seeing Fantastic Mr. Fox, which is an excellent film. I could say the fact Fox is in only four theaters this weekend was part of the reason many of you aren't looking it up, but The Messenger is working with the same number so that theory goes out the window. Philip Seymour Hoffman in Pirate Radio

Photo: Focus Features Richard Curtis's Pirate Radio features a collage of misfits played by some of the U.K.'s greatest comedic actors with Philip Seymour Hoffman bringing a taste of America to the story. The story isn't true, but is loosely based on a very real situation in the 1960s when the government-backed British Broadcasting Company (BBC) broadcast barely played two hours of rock and pop music every week over the U.K. radio airwaves. Compare this to the 571 American radio stations playing the same music 24 hours a day and you can immediately understand the dilemma. Curtis took this event, filled a ship with pirate radio broadcasters of his own creation and asked himself, "What would happen?" Pirate Radio is the result of that question.

Set in 1966, writer/director Richard Curtis was ten-years-old at the time and wrapped up in the tradition »
