Gone With The Wind 70th Anniversary Blu-ray Review

4 December 2009 12:19 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

There is nothing wrong with Gone with the Wind. Yes, it’s a bit racist. Heck, it’s a lot racist and you get to cringe listening to Clark Gable say things like “darkie.” The black characters are mostly shameful, and the film revels in the greatness and loss of the South. There are interesting ambiguities, though. Rhett Butler (Gable) recognizes that the civil war is stupid and bound for failure, but later on enlists. Okay, there’s a lot wrong with the film, but it’s also one of those films of such grand dramatic heft that it is also undeniable. My review of Gone with the Wind after the (Kris Kross will make you Jump) jump.

It’s hard not to wrestle with the history of the film, and Spike Lee has decidedly dismissed it. He’s not unfair for doing so; there are a lot of problems with the text. »

'Thor' Not The First Godly Team-Up For Natalie Portman And Kat Dennings

4 December 2009 11:32 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Just last week we broke the news that actress Kat Dennings will join Natalie Portman in Marvel's upcoming "Thor" movie, and while that was cool news on its own, we've been notified that this isn't the first team-up for the two in a mythological world. In fact, their first team-up with fantastic gods was more surreal than anything found in Asgard.

As ComicMix points out, Portman and Dennings previously appeared in Devendra Banhart's video for "Carmensita" — which is so wild a trip that it defies description. However, while Portman's role in the video is pretty obvious, Dennings makes her blue-skinned cameo around the 2:13 mark (as Kali the Destroyer). Check it out:

Natalie Portman on Thor’s Secrecy, Marvel as Crazy Underground Dwellers

2 December 2009 9:58 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Here’s Natalie Portman, talking to Parade Magazine about what it’s like to work with comic book movie studio Marvel, as they gear up their expensive “Thor” movie under the direction of Kenneth Branagh for a 2011 date. Portman will be playing the film’s leading lady, a human nurse name Jane Foster who falls in love with fallen Asgard God Thor, to be played by Chris Hemsworth. Just in time, too, because all hell’s about to break loose, and a giant hammer would sure come in handy at a time like that. “I think everyone has gotten more secretive just because of the preponderance of technology that can scam just about anything. It’s like you don’t get a script anymore that doesn’t have watermarks that would identify you if you ever tried to leak anything. The Thor script is hard to read because it’s »

Veteran actor David Warner has spoken about his role in the new Doctor Who animation Dreamland, which features the David Tennant incarnation of the Time Lord.

Warner played Ed Dillinger (aka Sark/Master Control Program) in 1982's cult sci-fi classic Tron and voiced the villainous Ra's Al Ghul in the Batman and Batman Beyond animated series.

He's also starred in films such as The Omen and Titanic and next year is set to reprise his role as Kenneth Branagh's father in BBC series Wallander.

In Dreamland - which is on the BBC website and airs on BBC2 this Saturday, December 5 - the 68-year-old voices the evil, cockroach-like alien Lord Azlok, as you can see in our exclusive sneak preview images below.

Warner (pictured right), a former Warwickshire actor, revealed it's not his first voyage into the world of Doctor Who, as he's previously done audio adventures playing the Time Lord. »

Natalie Portman Discusses Brothers and the Secrecy Surrounding Thor

2 December 2009 1:13 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Acclaimed director Jim Sheridan's (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father) new movie opens this week. Brothers tells the story of a soldier who returns home from captivity in Afghanistan to discover that his wife turned to his brother for comfort while he was presumed dead. Tobey Maguire plays Sam Cahill, the solider who tries to reintegrate with his family while coping with the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (Ptsd). Natalie Portman plays Sam's wife, Grace, a role that she told Parade she was eager to play.

It was such a fantastic opportunity because so many parts written for females my age are just, like, the cute, girlish love interest. To get to play a real woman who's really strong and a good mother was really a great opportunity.

To prepare for his role, Maguire met with soldiers who suffer from Ptsd. To play Grace, Portman said »

Thor Could "Redefine" the Super Hero Movie

2 December 2009 12:53 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada was brought to Los Angeles for Thor pre-production meetings with director Kenneth Branagh. In a recent interview with ComicBookResources, Quesada said that Marvel is "incredibly confident" with the outcome of the adaptation of Thor.

If you're a comics fan, you'll have a preconceived notion of what you're going to get. If you're a non-comics fan, you'll have another notion of what the movie is all about. And what's really amazing is that both groups will walk away going, "I've never seen anything like this before within the super hero genre." It's so cool, and I don't want to use the word unusual, but it is unusual in the sense that it redefines what a super hero movie can be.

The interview arrived on the heels of some leaked plot details, which suggest that Thor (Chris Hemsworth) will be sent to earth after his adopted brother »

Joe Quesada Says 'Thor' Movie Will Redefine The Superhero Genre

30 November 2009 10:29 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Not long ago, Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada and writer Brian Michael Bendis gushed about their excursion to the set of "Thor," the Kenneth Branagh-directed superhero movie filming in January.

Despite the creative duo's enthusiasm, however, it's difficult for some fans to imagine how the fantasy-based "Thor" will align with the more realistic universe established in Jon Favreau's "Iron Man" films. But according to Quesada, those worriers should cast aside any doubts in "Thor," as the film promises to overhaul the superhero genre entirely.

"['Thor' is] so cool, and I don't want to use the word unusual, but it is unusual in the sense that it redefines what a super hero movie can be," Quesada told Comic Book Resources regarding the upcoming film. "It's not the expected story or settings. That part of it is incredibly exciting to me."

Is Jeremy Renner Playing Hawkeye In 'The Avengers' And 'Thor'?

30 November 2009 5:31 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

As Marvel Studios ramps up plans for "The Avengers," many fans are wondering which characters outside of Captain America, Thor and Iron Man will wind up on the team's roster — and if one actor's comments are any indication, the superhero group will have a place for Hawkeye come 2012.

In an interview with Empire, actor Jeremy Renner revealed that he's discussed playing the comic book archer in Kenneth Branagh's "Thor" and, later, "The Avengers." The intriguing rumor surfaced when Renner was asked whether he'd be interested in playing Captain America, a potentially natural fit given the actor's role as an American soldier earlier this year in "The Hurt Locker."

"I don't know if I'd be right for Captain America," he said. "I met with the Marvel guys, actually, but we didn't talk about Captain America. But one of the writers, Zak Penn, we've become friends over time and he was »

Kenneth Branagh's vision for Thor is 'brilliant' with 'all the right ingredients'

29 November 2009 2:57 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

From its choice of director to its casting, Marvel Studios doesn't seem to have yet put a foot wrong with the Thor movie.

With Kenneth Branagh at the helm, the superhero adaptation arrives on the big screen in May, 2011.

The pressure is on to deliver an epic, and Marvel's editor-in-chief Joe Quesada says: "We are incredibly confident."

He believes people will have their own expectations of a Thor movie but that it will defy those ideas and go on to reshape not only the superhero movie genre but also the Thor comics on which it is based.

Quesada told Comic Book Resources: "If you're a comics fan, you'll have a preconceived notion of what you're going to get. If you're a non-comics fan, you'll have another notion of what the movie is all about.

Thor “Redefines What a Super Hero Movie Can Be” Says Marvel’s Joe Quesada

29 November 2009 8:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

I don't even vaguely trust Marvel editor in chief Joe Quesada to be objective about a Marvel Studios project. So when he goes all ebullient about how game-changing Kenneth Branagh's Thor is going to be, I don't take it very seriously. But I do wonder to what extent this will be different from the glut of superhero films we've seen to date. There's a specific tone and structure to superhero films from which we rarely see movies diverge, especially when they're introducing a character. I can imagine a lot of ways in which Branagh might break these informal rules, based on both his own background and the rich mythological legacy of Thor as a character, and I hope to see him engage them all. But for now, all we've got is Quesada's statement, which is after the break. Here's a big chunk 'o text from Quesada's conversation with Comic »

Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye in Thor?

29 November 2009 5:47 AM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) has hinted he may be playing the comic-book character, archer hero Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, in Kenneth Branagh’s “Thor

“Hawkeye could be interesting,” Renner said. “I’d love for that to happen. It’d be fun… I’m just happy to get considered for big franchise roles like that.”

He added:

“I’m not exactly sure why he’s shutting down the idea of playing the Cap’n in favor of the much less prestigious Hawkeye, but I’m intrigued. Let’s hear more.

“If I was a betting man, I would bet that Hawkeye would probably show up in Thor, and then be in The Avengers,” he said. “But do I know for sure? I can’t say. But I’d love for that to happen. It’d be fun.”
