The Cast Of ‘Humpday’ On Getting Down With Porn And The ‘Bromantic Zeitgeist’

9 July 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | From MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news

What do you do if you’re making a movie about making a porn flick? You do your freaking research obviously, which is the position “Humpday” star Josh Leonard found himself in when gearing up to shoot the indie movie about two straight college buddies who reunite in their 30s to make a gay porn in the somewhat misguided name of art.

“I started researching porn on the Internet about ten, twelve years ago, because I knew I would use it for something,” he joked with MTV News during a recent interview. “I thought it was important to be an aficionado. You’ve heard how Daniel Day-Lewis researches his roles – he goes deep. I’m following that template.”

The idea behind “Humpday” is pure farce, but from the beginning writer/director Lynn Shelton (”My Effortless Brilliance”) put the focus on deriving a naturalistic, character-driven story out of the absurdist high concept.

John Wayne’s Unseen Final Film — A Sci-Fi Western — Will Finally Be Released

9 July 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | From MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news

30 years after his death, John Wayne is still appearing in movies. The Hollywood icon’s final film, a never-before-released independent titled “Thunder Riders of the Golden West,” is about to hit DVD. The sci-fi western was produced in 1984 and features footage of Wayne that was shot before the actor died of stomach cancer in 1979, according to an article in a local Texas newspaper. Whether this footage was filmed specifically for “Thunder Riders” is unclear.

“Thunder Riders” was produced by Dave Burleson, a bit-part actor and stuntman who was apparently good friends with Wayne. He clarified to the Kerrville Daily News that “it’s not the last movie he acted in, but it’s the last performance to be released.” So that would mean Wayne’s role in this film was performed many years before he died, since the last movie he acted in was the 1976 western “The Shootist.”

John Woo Divebombs Into WWII Again With ‘Flying Tiger Heroes’

6 July 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | From MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news

Hong Kong action auteur John Woo (“Hard Boiled”) will remain in China for his next film, a WWII epic about the 1st American Volunteer Group (aka The Flying Tigers), according to a report on /Film. You’ve no doubt seen the group’s iconic aircraft, known for having teeth painted on their noses. Maybe a few of you have even seen the 1942 John Wayne movie “Flying Tigers,” a then-contemporary fictionalized story of the now-legendary airmen.

Woo’s picture, currently titled “Flying Tiger Heroes,” will ostensibly present us with the real history of the Volunteer Group. The Flying Tigers consisted of Americans recruited to aid the Chinese Air Force against Japan prior to America’s entrance into World War II. Of course, the $160 million action flick will also wow us with what the filmmaker promises to be “the most spectacular aerial battle scenes ever seen in Chinese cinema.”

Set Visit: Go Back to High School with 10 Things I Hate About You - Part II

3 July 2009 7:49 AM, PDT | From MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news

After we spoke with 10 Things I Hate About You series creator Carter Covington, they were ready to start filming again so we went to take a look. Covington had told us that there was a scene between Bianca (Meaghan Jette Martin) and her friend Dawn (Ally Maki) where the two had hatched a reality web series and, in an effort to get more viewers, they decide to kiss on camera. They were filming part of this scene when we went up to the house set on the soundstage, where we see Martin and Maki nervously preparing to kiss and, right when they're locked in, we have Bianca's father, Dr. Walter Strafford (Larry Miller, reprising his hilarious role from the movie), walking in mid-kiss. No, it's not That kind of web show, folks, but it's rather funny nonetheless to see Miller's priceless reaction. We watch them film this scene from a

Clifton Collins Jr. Discusses His Burgeoning Career

Clifton Collins Jr. talks Boondock Saints 2, Extract, directing music videos and much more

A few days ago, I mentioned on my Facebook page that I was extremely excited to be interviewing a favorite actor of mine, Clifton Collins Jr. I was also rather dismayed that there were many friendo's of mine out there who didn't know who he was, by name anyway. Some would recognize him when I mentioned he was the homosexual hitman in the critically-acclaimed film Traffic, or the crazy drug dealer in the equally-underrated The Rules Of Attraction (which is one of my favorite performances of his), some recognize him as the confused killer Perry Smith in Capote, a performance that some think is just as Oscar-worthy as Phillip Seymour Hoffman's Oscar-winning portrayal of Truman Capote. Oh yeah, and, of course, there were those who just recently saw him on the silver screen as Ayel, the

Zhang Yimou Really is Directing a Remake of The Coen Brothers’ Blood Simple

25 June 2009 6:25 AM, PDT | From FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news

The Coen Brothers are no strangers to remakes, having remade Alexander Mackendrick's The Ladykillers back in 2004, and currently planning a remake of the John Wayne western True Grit in the near future, but what if someone else was to remake one of their films? Does that make any sense to you? Well, it seems that acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers) is doing exactly that with his new movie San Qiang Pai An Jing Qi aka The Stunning Case of the Three Gun Shots, which is being billed as a remake of the very first Coen Brothers feature length film, Blood Simple. There were some initial rumours about this project last month I believe, but it all seemed a bit sketchy. Now, The Hollywood Reporter [1] has confirmed that production on the film started earlier this month and that it is indeed a remake, although how

Ed McMahon, TV's Top Second Banana, Dies At Age 86

23 June 2009 5:48 AM, PDT | From Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news

By Lee Pfeiffer

Ed McMahon, who transformed himself from being a second banana to Johnny Carson to becoming one of the most beloved American TV personalities of all time, has passed away at age 86. McMahon actually teamed with Carson on the game show Who Do You Trust? but the pair became TV legends when they took over NBC's The Tonight Show from Jack Paar in 1962. The industry would never be the same. The Carson/McMahon team became "Must See TV" for the majority of American audiences and at one time was said to represent 30% of NBC's annual profits. So great was their audience share that no other network ever came close to toppling their reign. ABC and CBS threw everything but the kitchen sink into the coveted 11:30 time slot, but Johnny and Ed steamrolled over everyone from Joey Bishop to Dick Cavett.  McMahon was the perfect foil for the likeable but opaque Carson,

Exclusive: Megan Fox Role in ‘Jonah Hex’ Merely a Cameo

19 June 2009 1:59 PM, PDT | From MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news

The good news is that “Jonah Hex” is finally getting the recognition he deserves, with an awesome recent episode of “Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” and an upcoming “Jonah Hex” movie starring Josh Brolin. The better news is that Megan Fox plays a barely-dressed prostitute in the August 2010 film, and that sequels are in the works.

The bad news? Well, Megan is barely in “Jonah Hex.” In fact, when it comes to her role, she even went so far as to invoke the dreaded “c” word.

“It’s basically a cameo,” revealed Fox when we spoke with her recently. “She’s a twisted love-interest to Jonah’s character; my part’s pretty small.”

As fans know, Jonah Hex populates a deadly world filled with lies, lead and life-threatening encounters. Which is why Fox’s next statement made it seem even less likely that her character Leila would be returning for those sequels.

By Jon Zelazny

(Note: This interview is also appearing at Eight Million Stories.)

June 11th marks the 30th anniversary of the passing of screen legend John Wayne. Most of the directors who made his classic films are of course long gone as well, so I was very pleased to sit down with Mark Rydell, director of The Cowboys (1972), the epic cattle drive saga most Western fans regard as Wayne’s last great starring role.

Rydell began directing theater in New York City in the early sixties, and went on to television and movies, including hits like The Rose (1979) and On Golden Pond (1981). We met at The Actors Studio in West Hollywood, where he and co-director Martin Landau continue to moderate acting classes.

Jon: When did you first join The Actors Studio?

Mark Rydell: The fifties. I went through the Neighborhood

Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter (DVD Review)

13 June 2009 9:43 PM, PDT | From Fangoria.com | See recent Fangoria news

During the finale of Friday The 13th Part III, we catch a few glimpses of Jason’s face. The bastard flashes a twisted smile not once, but twice at the woman he’s hoping to murder. In The Final Chapter (buy it on DVD here), Jason is again unmasked by the Final Girl—and she too is given a freakish grin to haunt her dreams. My question: Does this Jason always smile when he kills, or only when he’s face-to-unmasked face with his prey? Chew on that the next time you watch this ballbuster, rightfully hailed by many as the most entertaining and satisfying in the Friday series.

Tom Savini returns to lay waste to his most famous creation, with tastefully restrained FX that pack enough of a wallop to warrant hoots and cheers. Jason is played by Ted White, a stunt-gent who used to double for John Wayne,

Shall we gather at the river?

11 June 2009 1:11 PM, PDT | From blogs.suntimes.com/ebert | See recent Roger Ebert's Blog news

The first time I saw him, he was striding toward me out of the burning Georgia sun, as helicopters landed behind him. His face was tanned a deep brown. He was wearing a combat helmet, an ammo belt, carrying a rifle, had a canteen on his hip, stood six feet four inches. He stuck out his hand and said, "John Wayne." That was not necessary.

John Wayne died 30 years ago on June 11. Stomach cancer. "The Big C," he called it. He had lived for quite a while on one lung, and then the Big C came back. He was near death and he knew it when he walked out on stage at the 1979 Academy Awards to present Best Picture to "The Deer Hunter," a film he wouldn't have made. He looked frail, but he planted himself there and sounded like John Wayne.

Remember That TCM List of Influential Films? Here's a New Variation...

10 June 2009 2:18 PM, PDT | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Back in mid-April Turner Class Movies (TCM) revealed a list of their Top 15 Most Influential Films of All-Time. Shortly thereafter Kris Tapley at InContention.com started polling his readers to come up with another variation of the list and today the results are in. Some of the complaints about TCM's list had to do with the fact it didn't include a film after 1977's Star Wars and it had two John Ford/John Wayne films. That was, of course, on top of people getting upset over what films were left off the list, which is just one of the motivating factors for Tapley's attempt to take another stab at it. I have included the In Contention list directly below and movies with an * indicate a film that was also on TCM's list. The only thing I wish this list had was reasoning behind each title, but since it was

Cam Gigandet Can't Stop Playing A Vampire

8 June 2009 8:04 AM, PDT | From cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news

Cam Gigandet is apparently a guy who knows a meal ticket when he sees one. He was the head of the villanous crew of bloodsuckers in Twilight, but that's not enough vampire action for the former O.C. actor. He'll star opposite Paul Bettany in Priest, an adaptation of a graphic novel that's set in an Old West ravaged by a war between man and vampire. And yes, once again, Gigandet will be on the side of the undead! Mostly. According to THR he'll play a part-vampire sheriff who helps Bettany's warrior priest rescue a girl, Gigandet's love interest and Bettany's niece, who has been kidnapped by evil vampires. Convenient, eh? I don't know anything about the graphic novel, but I'm guessing it's deliberately evoking the John Ford film The Searchers, which found John Wayne rescuing his niece from Indians, accompanied by a young man who is part-Comanche. Though I

Click here to grab The Searchers on Blu-ray for $7.99. Strong sales for The Searcher have pushed back the shipping date to 7-13 days.
